The “Climate” has changed…

The Challenge Harbour Air Seaplanes, the world’s largest all-seaplane airline announced today that it has pledged to become completely carbon neutral by the end of 2007. As of October 1, 2007, Harbour Air will purchase high quality carbon offsets to mitigate the climate impact of all scheduled service, charter and tour operations. In addition, Harbour Air will institute a policy to track, reduce, and offset its corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by December 31, 2007. How we contribute to Global Warming For Every Pound of Fuel We Burn, We Produce 3 Pounds of CO 2 ! CO2 = Greenhouse Gas
11
What does this mean to the passenger? One-way trip Vancouver Harbour to Victoria Harbour = 24kg GHG/person One-way trip Vancouver Harbour to Victoria Harbour = 24kg GHG/person Offset Cost = $0.50/person Offset Cost = $0.50/person
12
Our Approach Phased in approach Phased in approach Phase 1 - Create a “carbon neutral booking” option for passengers Phase 2 - Proactively offset all flight operations Phase 3 - Reduce / off-set corporate footprint
13
Phase 1 The carbon neutral booking was created adding only $0.50 to a persons one-way flight cost. The carbon neutral booking was created adding only $0.50 to a persons one-way flight cost. Phase 2 Flight services: Offsetters.ca will invoice Harbour Air monthly on the basis of fuel consumption figures for the month. Phase 3 Corporate emissions: Offsetters.ca and Harbour Air will work together to Corporate emissions: Offsetters.ca and Harbour Air will work together to conduct an audit of greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions from its administration, ground operations, and corporate travel; develop a strategy to track these emissions on a monthly basis; develop a strategy to reduce these emissions; and help Harbour Air to invest in new renewable energy projects to offset all remaining emissions.
16
Future Concerns The new BC “Carbon Fuel Tax” The new BC “Carbon Fuel Tax” This tax will only be paid by airlines with flights within the Province. This tax will only be paid by airlines with flights within the Province. Companies that are being proactive and currently offsetting their fuel will still be affected by the tax. Conclusion With an all single engine fleet, Harbour Air is already the “greenest” option for people traveling between Vancouver and Vancouver Island.
