The Changing Market – Customers scream for Choice, for ability to control their destiny – Customers’ willingness to compromise, to trade-off “value” against budget – Value defined in other terms than (just) journal prices –Usage, users, impact factor, timeliness, version, alternatives… –Customer specific – Hence, selection criteria have changed: –From: financial/price and faculty (quality) driven –To (also): other performance indicators –To (also): other decision makers
8
The Changing Market – ‘Publishers’ Responses A.Extensions of Business Model –New building blocks, other than individual journal –Packages/Databases, Back files, eBooks –Individual articles, Individual objects –New pricing models –New rights/permissions other than thru ownership B.Other Content Suppliers –Open Access –Institution Repositories –Other Web-based content New publishing models provide librarians with alternatives: not just “must have” based decisions

And ALPSP? – ALJC – a collection of 557 journals from smaller ALPSP members, sold by Swets as a single package (single umbrella licence, single pricing model) – ALPSP – International trade association for not-for-profit publishers (272 members in 27 countries)

16
How did the ALJC come about? – Smaller publishers having a problem selling to consortia – squeezed out by ‘Big Deals’ – Libraries wanted to support high quality, good value journals from smaller publishers – Consultation with members, libraries and those offering similar packages – Report by John Cox – Tender process – 3 year contract between Swets and ALPSP
17
Swets’ Role – Organising the ALJC – Trial management – Exclusive Sales Agent for the ALJC – Sign the single customer licence agreement – Power of attorney – Customer subscription processing and administration – Publishers’ revenue payments – SwetsWise online content as delivery platform.
