Let’s look at the main regions of Texas and explore how the climate, landforms, and natural resources affected the Native American groups in early Texas. Delete this slide (Slide 1) before printing. What state lies north and northeast of Texas? What state lies directly northeast of Texas? Insert a text box in the top left corner, using the Text Box Tool. Type in your name. Look at a map of the South Central region of the US (p.13, Scott Foresman Gr 4 textbook), use the compass rose, and type in the answers to each question. Save your work. (File/Save As. Add key words to describe how they used their environment to meet their basic needs (food, shelter). Use the map on p.98 of your textbook and the information from pages and pages to complete this project. In each white box, use the map legend from the previous slide or the map on p. 98 of your textbook to identify the region and the Native American tribe that lived in that region. Add several key words to describe how they used the natural resources of the region to meet their basic needs. Your textbook will help you find this information.. [Stay inside the box. Slide 4: Ponder these questions and type in your responses Save your work. (File>Save or just click on the Save icon.) File>Print and place a check next to Frame Slides before clicking OK. Cut out each slide, following the square frame lines. On Slide 2, cut around three sides of each text box, on the dotted lines, to form flaps showing the name of the Native American tribes on the flaps. Slide 2 will be glued around the edges and placed on top of Slide 3 so that when the Tribe flaps are lifted, a region, Native American tribe name, and key word description is found below. Glue this slide (Slide 4) on the bottom so that your thoughts can be read. Why were the Karankawa fishermen rather than farmers? Why was the buffalo so important to the Comanche? 4

5 Student Checklist Click on Slide 2, and insert a text box in the top left corner, using the Text Box Tool. Type in your name. On Slide 1, type in the answers to each question, using the compass rose and a map of the South Central region of the US on page 13 of your textbook as a guide. Save your work. (File>Save As. Go to your personal directory and click Save.) Click on Slide 3. On each white text box, click and type in the name of the region and the Native American tribe that was found in that region of Texas. Add several key words to describe how each tribe used the resources of their environment to meet their basic needs for food and shelter. [Stay inside the box. You can decrease the size of your font if necessary to stay within the white box.] Save your work. (File>Save) Slide 4: Ponder these questions, use the information in your textbook, and type in your responses. Delete Slide 1and Slide 6 before printing. File>Print: Place a check next to “Frame Slides” before clicking OK. Cut out each slide, following the square frame lines. On Slide 2, cut on the dotted lines around three sides (left side, bottom, and right side) of each text box to form flaps showing the name of the Native American tribes on the flaps. Put a thin line of glue on the back of Slide 2 around the edge, and place it on top of Slide 3, so that when the Tribe flaps are lifted, a region, Native American tribe, and key word description is found below. Glue Slide 4 (My Thoughts slide) on the back of Slide so that your thoughts can be read. Check off each action as it is completed. (Teachers, print a copy of this slide for each student to use as a task card. Ask them to physically check off each step as it is completed. The students will use their Scott Foresman, Gr 4, Social Studies textbook and the information from pages and pages to complete this project.) [If you want to save paper: File>Print; Print what: Handouts, 2 per page. Click OK. Although this saves paper, it is harder for the students to cut the small flaps.]
