Causes Britain and France had long been engaged in a battler to build a world empire (7 Years War in Europe, First World War in history!) Competition will spill over to the New World. Acquiring colonies will become a priority for each. French establish New France in the heart of the continent

French and Native American Relations French were not concerned about settling colonies so much as they were concerned with exploiting them for their natural resources. French used beaver skins for hats Needed N.A. as trading partners, developed good relations and military alliances Hurons will become a powerful ally

War Begins British and French contest the Ohio Country French built Fort Duquesne Virginia government granted 200,000 acres of land in the same region 22 year old G. Washington sent to take Ohio back Washington established Ft. Necessity by France’s fort

First battle took place at Fort Necessity Britain lost most early battles, British officers did not show bravery or a willingness to put themselves out This will frustrate many Americans like Washington who had 4 horses shot from under him and was grazed by bullets twice

Pitt and Iroquois Change the Tide In 1757, King George II decided that he wanted new leaders in America-appointed William Pitt to oversee military Gives new life to the army and British start to win Iroquois ally w/British when they see they will win British defeat French in a sneak attack at the Battle of Quebec

Effects of F & I War Treaty of Paris -1763 Britain claims Canada and North America east of Mississippi River (including Florida) Spain receives New Orleans and land west of Mississippi Indians treated harshly under British Pontiac’s Rebellion-British officers delivered small-pox blankets
