Migration Routes of the First Americans Migrated: To move from one place to another and establish a home. Land Bridge: The ocean water dropped, exposing a wide bridge between Asia and North America called Beringia. -Asian mammals moved east across the bridge, followed by Sibirian hunters

Adapting to Environment Native Americans has to adapt to the environment, climate, and natural resources. Using Natural Resources Animal Skins: used for clothing Bones: Used to make goggles to protect from sun glare

California Oregon to Baja California Sierra Nevada mountain range Food Sources: Salmon, deer rabbits. Clothing: Grass skirts and animal hides Housing: Used the bark from the redwood trees and made cone shaped homes using poles

Great Basin/Plateau Between the Sierra Nevada's to the Rocky Mountains Limited food and water. Few lived here due to extreme temperature and sparse rainfall Plateau (Wyoming, Montana, Dakotas) -Villages built along major rivers Food: Rely on fish and plants for food Clothing: Weaving skills for baskets. Deer/antelope hides Housing: Built partly underground

Southwest Present day Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado -Heat, lack of water made living difficult Mesa People: grew fields of corn, beans, and squash -lived on high top, flat areas -used adobe to build homes that looked like apartments -Corn was the most important crop

Great Plains Vast area of treeless grasslands Buffalo Hunters-ambushed the buffalo. Bows made of buffalo tendons, with wooden arrow, tipped with sharp stones. They would trap buffalo and force them off a cliff Uses of buffalo-food, bone knives, waterproof containers and bedding. Horns and hooves used as spoons and bowls

Eastern Woodlands/Southeast Eastern Woodlands: Iroquois tribes -Lived in longhouses. Many families in one home. Southeast: Lived in humid areas. Houses were called mounds. Very fertile region
