Purpose of Resume Help get you the interview Highlight your accomplishments not your biography

Two Main Types 1. Chronological a. Reverse work history b. Preferred by recruiters 2. Functional a. Organizes skill by category

Resume Best Practices Use short sentences or bullet points No personal data Provide a summary or objective to let recruiter know what you are looking for Do not repeat words in your descriptions Use strong action words in your descriptions

Best Practices (cont.) Use key words from job posting Proofread: check spelling and grammar Font size should be 11 at the smallest and 12 is the best Arial and Times are good fonts to use One to two pages maximum Use a template but make it your own

Best Practices (cont.) Do not use slang or too many acronyms Do not use “I” or “me” Do not use colored background, fancy fonts or images Do not send the same resume to every job Do not lie

Job Application Make sure you have everything you need and enough time to complete before you start the on-line process E-mail address should be business appropriate Phone number listed should be answered professionally along with voice mail message Ensure you are qualified for job

Cover Letter Typically not enough room to include so use objective statement to explain what you are looking for Bring several copies of cover letter to interview

Resume Keep in simple formatting for easy upload Bullet points typically convert very poorly Bring several copies to the interview

Tips Spell check, spell check, spell check Make sure application is filled out completely and accurately Research location of job to see if it is a comfortable commuting distance Refrain from applying several positions at one time especially within one organization

Best Practices Arrive 10-15 minutes early Be prepared – research position and organization Dress the part Confident greeting and handshake Make eye contact and smile Maintain good posture

Best Practices (cont.) Keep calm, positive and enthusiastic Take time to collect thoughts before answering Keep responses to questions brief and professional Ask a few appropriate questions Thank interviewer(s) Follow up with thank you note or e-mail

Things to Avoid Going in “cold” Negative responses or just answering yes or no Badmouthing past employers Dressing inappropriately Keeping your cell phone on or checking your cell phone Chewing gum Talking to much or not enough Not following up after interview

Behavioral Based Questions Most common type of question utilized Asks for examples based on previous experiences: “Tell me about a time when…” Discuss the situation, what you did and what was the outcome or what you learned Past experience is the best indicator of future performance
