Andrew Jackson Notes Born and raised in a log cabin in the wilderness region of the Carolinas Orphaned at age 15; lived in poverty; became a “self-made man” War Hero– War of 1812 Was known as “Old Hickory” Elected President in 1828 Small farmers, craftsmen, and frontiersmen idolized him He favored “States’ Rights”– he thought state governments should have more power than the Federal government.

Trail of Tears - 1838 Timeline 1814-1827 – Andrew Jackson lead army in the taking of Indian lands 1829 – President Andrew Jackson sets policy for relocating Native People 1830 - Congress passes Indian Removal Act. This requires all tribes east of the Mississippi to relocate to the west. 1830-1835 – Different Native tribes sign “Removal Treaties” 1838 – 7,000 U.S. Troops move Cherokee off land and to the west. This is known as the “Trail of Tears”. Education of Little Tree
