JOB ADVERTISEMENTS Describe the position that a company wants to fill The qualifications and skills that the company is looking for in a person suitable for the position

Are designed in different ways but have the following information most of the time: Para 1 – Information about the company that is advertising the vacancy Para 2 – Provides detail about the position being advertised: the qualifications, training and skills that employer is looking for in a candidate, plus any experience

LETTER OF APPLICATION A letter of application is a formal letter that communicates a message to the potential employer as to why you believe you are best suitable for the position

Features: Top right corner - Your address Date Title of the person recruiting e.g. The Human Resources Manager Company Address

Features of a Letter of Application In the subject line state the position you are applying for as described in the advertisement The opening paragraph should detail the position your applying for. Also make reference of where you found the job advertisement

Features of a Letter of Application (Cont…) Main paragraph: -give a summary of your qualifications for the job (NB: DO NOT include to much detail if you’ll include a CV with this letter!)

Features of a Letter of Application (Cont….) Include examples of your experience or achievements Include a sentence that explains what is it that makes you want to work for this particular company (it must not be too long!)

Features of a Letter of Application (Cont….) When writing to the letter of application, keep in mind the person who is going to read it Pretend in your mind as if you are “talking” to him/her, using the correct formal language

Features of a Letter of Application (Cont….) Closing Paragraph – a concluding statement as to why you should get this job instead of someone else who has the same qualifications Sign your name and print it under your signature

CLASS ACTIVITY Pretend that you have already completed your further education and training. Work with a partner and apply for a job. Write a formal application letter in which you indicate why you are interested in the position. Include all information that you think will help you to get the job. Once you have completed the letter, compare it with that of your partner and see if there are any areas of improvement. If necessary, edit and correct your letter.
