2 ESA Student Services Department 2 Costs of Post-Secondary Education Tuition & Books ~ $8500 Residence & Meal Plan ~ $9000-$10000 $19 000/yr x 4 yrs ~ $76 000 (Figures based on an Honours Bachelors Degree Program at an Ontario University)

4 ESA Student Services Department 4 What if I don’t have enough $$$ saved? Bursaries –$$ that is awarded but does not have to be paid back –usually based on some area of need (eg: financial need) Loans –from a bank or from the government (OSAP) –must be paid back with interest (some grace period) Scholarships

6 ESA Student Services Department 6 Who Wins Scholarships? Students who Are involved in their community Participate in extra-curriculars Have good grades Have shown –Leadership –Initiative –Determination –Courage in the face of hardship Apply for them!

8 ESA Student Services Department 8 Getting Started Fill in the Scholarship Information Form & hand it in to Student Services ASAP Do your research: www.scholarshipscanada.com www.scholarshipscanada.com Set up a master calendar with deadlines Apply early Collect letters of recommendation from teachers, supervisors, etc.

10 ESA Student Services Department 10 Locating Scholarships Outside sources Your parents’ place of employment Your church or other religious organization Community groups such as the Optimists Society, Lions Club, etc. Banks & major financial institutions

11 ESA Student Services Department 11 Letters of Recommendation Request the Letter of Recommendation in writing 3 weeks prior to deadline Describe the scholarship criteria List the deadline date Provide a copy of the completed SIF Provide an addressed envelope (with a stamp) Write a thank-you note to your referee

12 ESA Student Services Department 12 Application Forms DO NOT hand-write the application DO complete a rough draft & get a teacher to proof-read it DO NOT leave any sections blank DO read the instructions & follow them DO NOT miss deadlines DO keep a photocopy of the application DO NOT TALK YOURSELF OUT OF APPLYING
