GETTING YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE (OR A JOB): The Student Guide…
2
There are two things that you need to create before you can apply for a job. You need to write a CV. You need to write an application letter.
3
What is a CV? Curriculum Vitae Course of Life
4
What does it do? It shows a potential employer what your skills and achievements are. What are you good at? Write a list of all the things that you are good at. Now give your list to someone who knows you well. Ask them to add anything that you’ve forgotten.
5
What skills do we have in the room?
6
What information goes on a CV? 1. Personal Details 2. Education and qualifications 3. Employment/work experience 4. Achievements 5. Interests 6. Referees
7
Personal Details: Name Contact Number Contact Email (If you have not done so already, create a sensible one. No-one will employ someone with the email address: hotsexychick@iliketobunkschool.com...)
8
CVs are a little strange… They do everything
9
Education and qualifications: Start with the school you are at now. (Uplands!) Give its full name. (I.E: International School of Penang – Uplands, Penang, Malaysia) List any qualifications you already have and when you received them. List any qualifications that you are predicted and when you will take them.
10
Example: Now do your own… Education: Sept 2011 The International IGCSEs to be taken in 2016: of Penang (Uplands) English Language English Literature Maths Bahasa… Sept 2004 - St. Christopher’s Primary School International Primary School, Penang
11
List any work experience and/or jobs that you have had. Starting with the most recent first! Work Experience: July 2014Starbucks, Gurney PlazaWaitress December 2013 Daiso, Gurney PlazaShop Assistant
12
Achievements: Write a list (and short description if necessary) of any relevant achievements that you may have gained that are not qualifications. Remember… MOST RECENT FIRST!
13
Interests: This is where you get to show what sort of person you are. No-one wants to employ a dullard. Think carefully about what you include, you’re trying to give a good impression of yourself!
14
Example: Write your own in time for next week’s tutor session. Interests: I thoroughly enjoy sport and represent my school in both Football and Netball. These sports have taught me not only to enjoy physical activity but also the importance of teamwork. As well as sport I like music and play both the piano and the guitar. I am part of a band called ‘The Specials’ with other students from my school. I love learning new songs and performing to an audience…
15
What skills are in demand? Communication I.T. Awareness Time & Personal Management Team Work Supervising Flexibility Commercial Awareness Financial Awareness Organising/ Co-ordinating Initiative Problem Solving Promoting / Influencing
16
Referees: These are people who know you in a work or education capacity. They are people who will speak well of you and your work ethic. **You must ask if someone is happy to be your reference before you include their details on your CV.** You need to give their name, email address and the capacity in which they know you.
17
Important things to think about… Yourself Skills Knowledge Experience Attributes The Job Requirements Position Company
18
Hints and Tips… 1. Check your email address – ilove1Dsomuchiwanttomarrythem@hotmail.com... Hmm… ilove1Dsomuchiwanttomarrythem@hotmail.com 2. Check spelling and grammar! – 70% of CV’s are rejected due to spelling mistakes! 3. Make sure you have the correct telephone number! 4. Don’t lie. 5. Tailor your CV to suit the job you are applying for. What do you do that shows you would be good at the job?
