5 10 Year Change in Population Population: The total population in Palo Alto increased by 10% over the past decade to 64,000, growing at the same rate as the state. The greatest increase was in the Asian population (7,000).).

6 20002010 Diversity: Palo Alto remained majority white, non-Hispanic, although this share of the population fell over the last ten years from 73% to 61%, while the Asian share increased from 17% to 27% of total.

Median age increased from 40 to 42, compared with the current statewide median of 35. The share of the population age 65+ is 17% of the total, compared with 11% statewide.

Traditional families—married couples with children—are also more common here than in California as a whole, at 27% of all households.

Just 2% of adults have not completed high school, compared with 20% of adults statewide, and 79% have a earned Bachelor’s degree or higher, compared with 30% in California overall.
