Boucephalas and Bastardry Aim: to analyse and interpret key events in Alexander’s youth Starter: Briefly outline the influence of 2 people on the young Alexander.[5 marks]

Philip- Difficult relationship, changes his teacher as relationship with Olympias gets worse. Leonidas- Teacher, close relationship. Aristotle- Teacher, close bond. Long serving.

3 Key events Although we have some background to Alexander’s youth, we’ve not really had any ‘Ancient History Moments’ (epic, grand and almost unbelievable incidents). This changes as Alexander gets older!

Alexander and Boucephalas Boucephalas The first instance comes when Alexander first meets Boucephalas- His Horse and life time companion. Alexander at war The second key event comes when at the age of 16 Alexander is put (temporarily) in charge of Macedonia. Read Plutarch 9 What happens? What does this tell us about Alexander? Sacred band of Thebans The Sacred band were a group of 150 Male lovers who made up one of the Ancient world’s most elite fighting units. The Sacred band had beaten the Spartan and Persian armies in numerous battles.

The ‘bastard’ incident Despite his sons success, relations between Philip and Alexander take a turn for the worse. Read Plutarch 9.5 Read Plutarch 9.5 What happens? How does Alexander and Philip’s relationship change? What causes this change?

Plenary How would you characterise the changing relationship between Alexander and Philip? How does Alexander develop during his youth? Does Alexander’s success damage his relationship with Philip or are other causes to blame?
