1. Year One Parent Meeting Everything you ever wanted to know about Year One but were afraid to ask! Wednesday 17th June 2015 4.00pm

2. Key Stage One: National Curriculum After Foundation Stage comes Key Stage One – Years 1 and 2 Children are planned for, taught and assessed following the National Curriculum guidelines. Children also continue to work on the 6Rs, to help develop their independent learning skills.

3. Key Stage One: Assessments and Levels In Key Stage 1 most children progress through the National Curriculum levels into Level 1, then up to 2 and sometimes 3 in this order: Level 1c, then 1b, then 1a Level 2c, then 2b, then 2a Level 3c etc Some children will still be working below these levels – on the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

4. By the end of Year 1, children are expected to reach Level 1A/2C. Remember these levels are only a guideline – children develop and make progress at different rates. Year One Expectations

5. Children will be divided into 2 classes, and will follow the same topics. Teachers plan together and provide similar opportunities for the children. The children will be introduced to a different teaching style as the year goes on, with a move towards more formal teaching. Provision

Key Skills - Numeracy Place value and counting: Counting, writing and ordering numbers up to 10, 20 and then 100 Knowledge of tens and units Counting forwards and backwards in 1’s, 2’s and 10’s Calculating: Counting on and back on a numberline to add and subtract Doubling and halving small numbers. Number bonds to 10 and 20 Money – coins, totals and change. Using mathematical symbols -, +, =

7. Key Skills - Numeracy Shape and Measurement Skills: Name and describe 2D and 3D shapes. Read the time to the hour and half hour. Understand positional language Making whole and half turns Comparing objects in terms of length, weight and capacity Data Handling Skills: Sort and classify objects – create simple graphs.

8. Key Skills - Reading Apply phonic knowledge – diagraphs (oa), trigraphs (igh), split diagraphs (i-e) Use picture cues Take account of punctuation Tricky words Read for sense and meaning

9. Phonics ch th a zz All children will participate in phonics sessions, learning the different ways we can read and write the sounds. The different ways of writing each of the sounds are divided into Phases – Phases 2, 3, 4, and 5. Spellings will be linked to the phonics they have been learning.

10. Key Skills - Writing Can say a sentence before writing it down Apply phonic knowledge Leave spaces between words Use capital letters and full stops accurately Handwriting Children will be introduced to a cursive, joined handwriting style – see handout

12. Topics Each half term, we base much of our learning around topic work. We choose the topics so that they fit in with our learning objectives in science, history, geography and technology. We also continue to follow the ‘Come and See’ RE programme provided by the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

13. Year One Routines Snack time – children will need to bring a snack and a drink. The snack should be a piece of fruit or a biscuit. Children should be encouraged to come into the playground independently and to line up when the bell goes at 8:55am. Children should not be left in the playground before 8:45am as this is when a teacher will be out on duty. After school, the children will leave the building through the front door.

14. Behaviour We encourage children always to be courteous, polite and considerate towards others. Good behaviour is rewarded with a froggy ticket. A draw will take place every Monday morning, and the winner will be the ‘Star of the Week’. The school behaviour policy of Red and Yellow cards will continue.

18. Transition for the children Some children may be worried or not know what to expect when they go the Year 1. In order to help ease their move to a new class, the children will be spending 2 days with their new teachers. During this time, they will be able to get used to the classroom routines and they will have an opportunity to show us their skills! This will be taking place on the 8 th and 9 th of July.
