2 Democracy: Cold War  In the time known as the cold war, the US rallied against the spread of communism by becoming involved in the Korean and Vietnam wars. We also supported anti-communism rebels in nations like Nicaragua and Afghanistan.

3 Democracy: Nationbuilding  Nationbuilding is best described as the process of using military to bring civil order in nations that are having problems with their government.  The US became involved in nationbuilding in countries like Bosnia, Haiti, and Somalia.  Nationbuilding is best described as the process of using military to bring civil order in nations that are having problems with their government.  The US became involved in nationbuilding in countries like Bosnia, Haiti, and Somalia.

4 Democracy: Iraq & Afghanistan  Afghanistan: After 9/11 US troops went into Afghanistan and defeated the Taliban government that had harbored the Al Qaeda. We did some nationbuilding and helped the country build a democracy.  Iraq: After taking out Saddam Hussein in 2003, The US has been in the pursuit of rebuilding the nations government. New officials were elected and surprisingly a lot of Iraqi’s showed up to vote. 5 Democracy: Saudi Arabia & Egypt  The US had many setbacks in the pursuit of democracy in many Middle Eastern countries. US leaders did however refrain from pressuring these autocratic governments to adopt democratic reform. Instead they used these nations in attempt to increase US security like stabilizing Iraq, and deterring Iran.

6 Foreign Aid:  After WWII, foreign aid became a big deal for the US. We gave a lot of support financially to the hurting European countries.  During the power struggle with the Soviets during the Cold War, the US increased our foreign aid to impacted countries. In doing this we were trying to stop the spread of communism.  After WWII, foreign aid became a big deal for the US. 14 Aids Relief  The US has given a ton of Aids relief to countries in the world. (mostly in Africa)  PEPFAR is an example of this.
