FACTS AND FIGURES NACKA MUNICIPALITY Third largest municipality in Stockholm County Population of 85 500 inhabitants Expansive municipality, prognosis year 2015 is 98 500 inhabitants (+15%) A total of 35 000 households Housing: one-family houses 41%, apartment houses 59% Moderate Party majority in the Municipal Council

In Sweden, the responsibility for waste management is divided between: Municipalities; responsible for household waste Producers; responsible for their respective product groups (i.e. newspaper, packaging material, electronic equipment, batteries, light bulbs and tyre) Other waste holders/producers (mainly industry and business); responsible for their own waste SWEDISH WASTE MANAGEMENT Packaging material

SWEDISH WASTE MANAGEMENT In Sweden in 2008 we produced 4 731 660 tons of household waste or 511 kg/persons Material recycling

SOURCE-SORTING OF WASTE Separation at source is legislated in the Swedish environmental legislation and local regulation/by-laws Separation is done already in the household i.e.: - Packaging material: glass, cardboard, paper, metal, plastics; to Recycling stations - Newspaper to Recycling stations - Batteries; collected in Red boxes - Electronic waste; mobile, computer etc. to Recycling centres - Light bulbs to Recycling centres - Medical waste to Pharmacy - Tyres to Retailer shops - Bulky waste to Recycling centres - Household hazardous waste to Recycling centres, stations or campaign SWEDISH WASTE MANAGEMENT Red box for batteries

WASTE MANAGEMENT IN NACKA Employees: 3 municipal waste managers + head of the department + Customer services All operational services - waste collection, operation and treatment - carried out by private contractors Nacka the owner of: 2 recycling centres and 4 collection stations for household hazardous waste All costs for the waste management planning and services are financed to 100% with waste fees NACKA MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

WASTE MANAGEMENT IN NACKA Nacka waste sectors responsibilities: Planning the waste management services for household waste Contract and supervise private companies Economic: budget, investment, prognosis, calculation/construction of waste fees etc. Information and raising awareness Procurement, tender documents, permit, waste management plan, by-laws etc. Daily contact (telephone/email) with the public; advice, problems etc. Projects NACKA MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

COLLECTION SYSTEMS Household waste: Collected from residential- business- and shopping areas, wheel bins (majority) or large plastic bags Collected by vehicles or/and boat (islands), 1-3 times/week on each address 20 000 tonnes household waste year 2008 NACKA MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

COLLECTION SYSTEMS Household waste: Household waste transported to Stockholm’s largest incineration plant, produce electricity and heat Alternative! Inhabitants may separate food waste for composting in a compost bin on their property. Encouraged by reduction on the waste fee. NACKA MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT Compost bin

COLLECTION SYSTEMS Household hazardous waste (HHZ): Source sorted in the households Transported by the inhabitants optional to: - Recycling centres - Collection stations at petrol stations - Mobile collection campaign twice/year by truck in residential areas Transported to different treatment facilities depending on type of waste 207 tonnes of HHW collected year 2008 (paint, car batteries, oil etc.) NACKA MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

NACKA MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT STUDY VISIT TO SKURU RECYCLING CENTRE It might be a lot of traffic on the centre - watch out for cars/trucks!!!!
