1 Institutional Learning Outcomes: Assessing Personal and Professional Development FLEX – Spring 2015 College of the Redwoods Angelina Hill

2 ILO 1: Academic & Career Technical Objectives Students will successfully acquire program outcomes and complete degrees and/or certificates. This institutional outcome indicates if the objectives stated for degrees and/or certificates are being met. Students earning degrees will acquire the College’s general education outcomes: Effective Communication, Critical Thinking, and Global/Cultural Context. Possible assessment tools: ▫Program assessment data ▫General Education Outcomes assessment data ▫Degree/Certificate completion rates ▫Transfers & transfer eligibility ▫External accreditation of programs

3 ILO 2:Personal and Professional Development Students will reach their career, transfer, or personal goals. This outcome indicates if a student's individual goals are being met. This includes the goals of students earning degrees, or of students taking only a few courses for training and/or personal enrichment. Possible assessment tools: ▫Graduating exit survey ▫CTE employment survey ▫External licensure and certifications ▫Students with comprehensive SEPs ▫Student Satisfaction Inventory ▫Students declaring a CTE- or transfer-related degree or certificate (vs. enrichment) ▫Meeting/Exceeding SLO expectations – use of existing course assessment reports.

4 ILO 3: Community and Global Responsibility Students will develop the awareness and skills needed to contribute to local and global communities. This outcome indicates if students recognize ways to contribute to their community and the value of effectively engaging in cross- cultural environments. Possible assessment tools: ▫Student awareness and appreciation of diverse perspectives (exit survey) ▫Service learning and internship work ▫Student club service work; community outreach performed by student athletes ▫Student awareness of, and attitudes toward campus activities and services related to diverse student populations (survey) ▫Class and club community activities (survey of faculty and clubs)

6 Graduating Exit Survey - 2014 206 students who applied for graduation during the 2013-2014 academic year responded ▫This represents about 64% of students who received an Associate’s degree and 10% of students who received a certificate. ▫The majority of applicants were for degrees (13 certificates)

8 Intent to Transfer 65% of all respondents planned to transfer. ▫The majority planned to attend a CSU, and about 80% of them plan to transfer to HSU. N = 203

10 Student Education Plans More students are using a Student Education Plan in 2013-14 compared to 2011-12.

11 Educational Objective Nearly all respondents reported success in completing their main educational objective. At least 93% of all students in a Division have reported completing their objective each year since 2011- 2012. At least 95% of respondents in each Division indicated that CR provided quality programs, and that CR had quality instructors for educational success. These percentages have been near ceiling over the last three survey administrations.

12 Employment at Graduation About one-third of employed respondents indicated that their employment was in the area of their study/major.

13 Impact of Degree on Employment Nearly all students reported that their degree/certificate will have a positive impact on current/future employment. For each Division, the highest overall rates were reported in 2013-14.

14 Satisfaction The modal response for all questions was very satisfied. Average response to all questions was between satisfied and very satisfied. 15 General Comments Respondents were asked to provide general comments. 76 of the 203 respondents provided comments. ▫31 made reference to an overall positive experience at CR. Were not specific about people or programs, but appreciative about CR in general. ▫26 students commented about the high quality instruction and/or staff at CR. ▫Other comments received by multiple students included:  Difficulty with information given by Counseling/Advising  Desire for more general education courses (e.g., Chem, Math) and online courses  Desire for additional workshops for students (e.g., first generation)  Difficulties with a specific instructor

16 General Comments Most comments received in the 2011-12 and 2012-13 were also very positive. Difficulties with Counseling/Advising, a desire for more general education courses, and a desire for more workshops also appeared in the 2011- 12 and 2012-13 administrations.

17 Conclusion ILO: Students will reach their career, transfer, or personal goals. This outcome indicates if a student's individual goals are being met. This includes the goals of students earning degrees, or of students taking only a few courses for training and/or personal enrichment. There is evidence of successful attainment of educational goals.

18 Conclusion Expected graduates report that they are satisfied with the preparation they received for their chosen occupation or to transfer to another college. Expected graduates report high levels of satisfaction with their educational experience, preparation, and quality of instruction. Quality of instruction consistently receives the highest levels of satisfaction. More expected graduates report using a Student Education Plan (SEP) each year.
