Electoral College Votes
19
Civics Extra! Presidential Elections & the Electoral College U.S. elections have a 2 tiered voting system to elect a president. U.S. citizens have a popular vote but this DOES Not necessarily determine a winner. Each State also casts their “electoral College Votes”. A pres. Candidate needs 270 electoral votes out of 538 total possible Electoral College Votes. Each state has a diff. number of electoral college votes which depends on the state’s total number of senators and congressmen it has. (How many senators does each state have?) example: NJ: 2 senators and 12 Congressmen for a total of 14 electoral college votes.
