PARTICIPANTS WILL EXAMINE THE PRE-AP MODEL IMPLEMENTED BY THE LOWNDES COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND LEARN TO MAXIMIZE THE BENEFITS OF INSTITUTING A PRE-AP PROGRAM STARTING IN THE SEVENTH GRADE WHILE MANAGING THE VARIOUS CHALLENGES. PARTICIPANTS WILL LEAVE WITH STRATEGIES FOR DEVELOPING SUCCESSFUL PRE-AP AND AP PROGRAMS THAT INVOLVE PARTNERS, GARNER INSTRUCTIONAL BUY-IN AND STRENGTHEN VERTICAL ALIGNMENT. “FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL : PRE AP AND AP PROGRAMS IN HIGH POVERTY SCHOOLS”

WHAT CAN AP DO FOR ME? College credit Save money in college Preparation for college courses Research shows that students who attempt at least one AP course in high school are more likely to graduate from college in 4 years. AP also looks good to colleges and helps to make students eligible for scholarships.

AVID—ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION New program in the Lowndes County and City school district. It is the first one of its kind in Mississippi. 4 year program at high school level with college as the main goal. Students begin AVID in the 9 th Grade AVID elective course Tutorials Cornell Note Taking Notebook College Tours and Admissions This class helps with all aspects of students’ readiness and getting accepted to 4-year universities.

HOW DO I GET CREDIT FOR AP? By passing the AP exam Exam dates May 2—Chemistry; 8 am May 4—Calculus AB; 8 am May 5—AP English Lit and Comp; 8 am May 6—AP US History; 8 am May 6—Studio Art portfolios must be Submitted by this date May 9—AP Biology; 8 am; Physics, 12 pm May 11—AP English Lang and Comp; 8 am AP Statistics, 12 pm Scores range from 1-5 with 5 being the highest.

ON OCTOBER 28, THE AP SENIORS TOOK A TOUR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI. ON NOVEMBER 4, THE AP JUNIORS TOOK A TRIP TO TOUR MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY.

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL Represent AP Parents 5 parents from each county school who will meet bi-monthly to discuss needs of AP Encourage and recruit students to be a part of the AP program in Lowndes County Please sign up with Mrs. Lott if you are interested in being a part of this council.

PRE-AP TO AP Pre-AP starts in 7 th grade. Springboard Students are screened and recommended for Pre-AP and AP, however we maintain an open door policy Teachers are trained by College Board before they teach Pre-AP and AP.

STUDENTS NEED TO LEARN TO THINK AND ACT INDEPENDENTLY AND RESPONSIBLY. WE AS EDUCATORS CAN HELP DEVELOP THIS UNDERSTANDING AND SKILL SET. WE MUST TEACH OUR STUDENTS TO LEARN HOW TO LEARN. ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING IS THAT MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATORS MUST WORK TOGETHER IN SUPPORT OF STUDENTS.

Middle and High School teachers meet monthly in subject areas Vertical Alignment Document Teachers lesson plan together and collaborate Meet AT LEAST 4 times per year. Preferably every month. Administrators must protect this meeting time Common planning time is good too VERTICAL ALIGNMENT

WHAT CAN ADMINISTRATORS DO? Support, Support, Support Be interactive Take pride in AP Put as much emphasis on students succeeding on the AP exam as you do on students succeeding on the state assessments.

SUCCESS Over the last 4 years we have seen a large increase in total AP and Pre-AP participation. We have also seen an increase in students scoring 3, 4, and 5 on the AP exams. We have a greater number of students taking the PSAT. We have an open door policy for AP and Pre-AP.
