2.  Definition: When a viewer imposes their unwanted or objectifying gaze upon an image  The Male Gaze is an unequal power relationship between the viewer and the viewed (or the gazer and the gazed.)  This “gaze” is typically shown through the lens (framework) of a heterosexual, white male WHAT IS THE MALE GAZE?

3. o The Male Gaze is EVERYWHERE! Movies, television, the internet, advertising, etc… o Laura Mulvey helped to introduce the concept of the Male Gaze in her essay, Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema… o “In film, the male gaze occurs when the audience is put into the perspective of a heterosexual man” WHERE DO YOU SEE THE MALE GAZE?

5.  The cinema (any media outlet today) offer a number of possible pleasures, such as scopophilia.  Scopophilia = looking (at an image) itself is a source of pleasure. In other words, receiving some type of erotic pleasure through looking.  Scopophilia is part of the Male Gaze in the sense that it allows the viewer to objectify and use an image for a sense of pleasure and power.
