A year prior to this incident, a group of schoolgirls in Kandahar had acid thrown in their faces by men who objected to them attending school.

It is very uncommon that children in orphanages are provided with proper or any education. Two decades of war in Afghanistan has left some one million orphans and abandoned children across the country.
