Very Briefly... the bottom line is... We have proven basic business training resources you can use! But it will be useful to have a bit of the background: Assumption: You accept the argument of business as a sustainable solution to poverty in the Developing World How the resources came about What we have managed to achieve through them How they work (what they look like) Where to get them (for free!)

How it started... An expo trip to Uganda (Katwe, Jinja, Masaka, Rakkai) Inspired by stories of Kuzuko, Hagar, Bulembu, & wanting to use ‘scant’ resources of money and time (naively???) Hearing the needs of a range of small business people Automation / More skilled staff / So I can be richer Next set of supplies (but my business is successful!!!) £3000 for a shiny ‘new’ oven with no impact on sales/costs Asking ‘why?’ and realising that they did not really understand business at all And that was the ones that were successful!!!

What about the others? Some common ‘misunderstandings’... It is okay to spend more than you get back in The customer will wait for me if I’m late Everything my customers pay me is profit I can always borrow more money if I need to I can take as long as I want over the work Conclusion: They actually needed basic training, and until they got it, we would be throwing good money after bad

There must be some suitable training available over the Web... Mustn’t there? What little we could find, suffered from one or more of the following... You would have to pay for it (each instance) It was technology based (CD-Rom, on-line, DVD etc) It was based on poor teaching principles (talking heads) It was too complex and involved Eventually, it dawned, the one option we had hoped to avoid... we would have to write it ourselves!!!

Are the reasons for poor business practice ‘cultural’? Are we in danger of saying your culture is ‘wrong’? The factors behind good business are ‘scriptural’! By using scriptural arguments we gain their commitment, we strengthen the support of the local church (buildings, cascade, reinforcement), and we can influence how they use their success to help others. We also hope to tap into the ‘labour’ of the Church in the UK to multiply the effect Issue? Stated position: The material we are making freely available has been developed as an outworking of our Christian faith, but it has been written to benefit all those in need, whatever their belief system. We are therefore pleased to work with sincere and caring followers of all faiths or none. The material does not proselytize, but it is written honestly from a perspective that God does exist (rather than the traditional one) We hope that this proven resource will be of some use in your own efforts to push back against the tragic consequences of global poverty, and that, even if you do not share our faith, you will bear with the spiritual reflections within it which, for us as Christians, are an integral part of our insight and understanding.

Step by step Step 1: Write it and test it in the UK Step 2: Send it out to Uganda and get feedback Step 3: Test it for real with a group of 40 Step 4: Develop trainer training materials Step 5: Train trainers & set them up to train others Step 6: Try it on a different continent Step 7: Realise potential: acceleration/multiplication Step 8: Develop a complete self help system Step 9: ???
