Downward leadership and upward leadership are needed in balance to be effective. Neither can work alone. In order for organizational leadership to be effective leadership needs to occur at every level of an organization and every member of the org needs to be led from time to time. THE GENERAL UNDERSTANDING

So, what does it mean to Lead Up? BEGINNING QUESTION

1. Building your supervisor’s confidence in you requires you have confidence in your supervisors. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

2. The vital bond between you and your boss cannot form without open and honest communication. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

3. Persistence often pays, but you have to accept that sometimes you will win, but mostly you will lose or be told no. (like, 90% of the time) THE RULES OF LEADING UP

4. Take advantage of any opportunity to transcend the org chart and meet or present to the big bosses. This will help you build the confidence you can handle anything. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

4a. IMPORTANT CAVEAT TO RULE FOUR – DO NOT SHOW UP YOUR BOSS!!!! THE RULES OF LEADING UP

5. If you are not sure what your boss wants, then ask for directions! THE RULES OF LEADING UP

6. If you have more than one boss then it is important to treat each one as an individual. Do not place one job in order of importance. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

7. Sometimes we have mean bosses and vengeful messages. It is then our job to insulate co- workers and to manage the message when possible. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

8. In times of uncertainty make your voice heard with clarity. A time of reorganization or reform is a great chance to shine! THE RULES OF LEADING UP

9. Leading up is a two way street. In order for you to lead up you must encourage your staff to do the same. Thus you must learn to be lead. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

10. Over time confidence and innovation will wane and you will reach a plateau. That is a time to find new challenges to freshen the pot! THE RULES OF LEADING UP

11. Never forget those people who allow you to lead up. A solid staff instills confidence from higher ups. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

12. Stay in tune to what your staff is saying to you. Many times they understand the current trends on campus better than you do. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

13. Make sure your co- workers understand your strategy. If you want support from them then they need to understand your perspective. THE RULES OF LEADING UP

14. Every organization has an ebb and flow and talented people at all levels. Leading up also means leading across and letting others lead from time to time. THE RULES OF LEADING UP
