APA SAMHSA Minority Fellowships Program (MFP) Since 1975, the fellowship has equipped 433 psychiatry residents from minority and underrepresented (MUR) groups to serve as leaders in mental health and substance abuse treatment services to diverse and underserved populations Among 35 current psychiatry fellows are: 17 African Americans, 8 Asians, 5 Hispanics/Latinos, 2 Native Americans and 2 of non-minorities 500 MUR medical students have explored psychiatry as a career choice in travel scholarships, summer mentoring internships, addiction externships and HIV training

Minority Fellowship Program Alumni have become distinguished psychiatrist leaders in a wide range of areas: Academic Psychiatry Faculty and Chairs of Psychiatry Leaders in Psychiatric Research Psychiatry Residency Training Directors Director, County Mental Health Services Medical Directors of Community Mental Health Centers Leaders in Organizational Medicine and Psychiatry Psychiatry MFP OUTCOMES

Based on a survey of past fellows, the type of service provided is fairly evenly split between mental health only (45%) and mental health and substance abuse (55%). The data below shows employment practice settings and population served from a survey of alumni (April 2007).
