HEALTH AND THE MEDIA THE ROLE OF THE FOOD STYLIST

EVERY DAY WE MAKE CHOICES ON WHAT TO EAT Healthy choices include selections from all of the major food groups. Brainstorm as a group now what the major food groups are What meals include all of the food groups?

YOUR LUNCH http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/index-eng.php Above you will find a link to the Health Canada site, after looking at it, discuss the questions below: What are the food groups? How much is a serving? How many servings from each area does your lunch have in it? What could you add to make your lunch a more complete meal?

TASK 1 With a partner or alone, design a perfect lunch that has something from each food group, and ample amounts of fruit and/or vegetables What name would this meal have in a restaurant? When complete, present your idea to three other people/groups before handing it in

MEDIA INFLUENCE ON EATING Fast food ads are very clever They come on when we are tired, hungry and too lazy to cook Ads on the television are timed to come on during that dinner hour, or late at night when we are feeling hungry or bored or lonely and are looking for something to make us feel better Each ad makes the food look hot, delicious and super tempting Even though we know it is not good for us, we still eat all of that fast food (think of how many places can stay in business!)

FAST FACTS: Some more facts and figures about food services: On average, Canadian households visit a restaurant for a meal or snack 520 times a year. More than 90,000 food services and drinking places operate in Canada—about one for every 350 Canadians. Canadian households spend an average of 30% of their food budget on food services, compared with 42% for American households. The average check size at a restaurant is $6.12, including taxes but excluding tips. The most popular food and beverage at Canadian restaurants are french fries and coffee. (this data is from Statistics Canada from 2004 – it has only gone up from here)
