2.  Updated by the Province of Ontario, 2014  All municipal planning decisions and activities are to “be consistent with” the PPS  A number of policies geared to promoting healthy, active communities.

3.  Guiding document for planning and land use in the County - broad themes, puts provincial policy in local context  Policy 7.3: “Goal: To encourage the development of walking and cycling trails throughout Lambton for the benefit of local residents and to enhance the experience of visitors to the County.”  Currently under review – policies likely to be strengthened.

4.  Advisory group, with representation from Planning, Public Works, Lambton Public Health, Social Planning, Municipalities, local trails organizations, Tourism Sarnia-Lambton  Promotes healthy, active living through increased use of non-motorized transportation options and the development of the local trail system.

5.  Origin was a coalition of County trails organizations, formed in early 1990’s  Established regional trails network, “Share the Road” system and associated signage  Was dormant for a number of years, re- established several years ago with a resurgence of interest in trails

6.  Efforts of this committee resulted in the preparation of the County’s first comprehensive Trail Map  Prepared by County Planning staff with funding provided by the Ontario Trillium Foundation through the LCRTC.  Now working with Waterfront Regeneration Trust to extend Waterfront Trail through Lambton County

7.  Co-ordinated by Waterfront Regeneration Trust  1,400 km continuous cycling route from Quebec border to Town of Lakeshore in Essex (68 local municipalities) – longer than Rhine River Trail through 4 European countries  Being extended now through Chatham-Kent  County Council has approved County’s participation in Lambton portion  Working with 5 local municipalities  Uses existing infrastructure (on and off-road)  Promotes local use as well as cycle tourism

8.  May 2010 adopted “Active Communities Charter”:  In active communities, the built and social environments support and enable healthy, active living by providing opportunities for people to engage in daily physical activity.  Active communities are created when community stakeholders, decision-makers, interest groups and residents place value on and work towards: the health, safety and quality of life of all individuals; environmental sustainability; and equal access to all for opportunities to be physically active.  Active communities are vibrant and economically successful because they encourage healthy activity, social interaction, citizen engagement and attract visitors and new residents.

9.  First City Master Plan since 1959  Intended to knit all modes of transportation and transit together  Identifies strategic priorities and short, medium and long-term improvements  Bike Network and Urban Design key elements of the Plan
