3 Descriptive Language Adjective: Help readers understand what is happening in a text. Adverb: Descriptive language that describes an action. Pg. 12-13 of Pig Pig Gets a Job: What might you see, hear, feel, and smell if you were fixing race cars? What does shiny mean? 4 Comprehension Skill Fantasy: A story about something that couldn’t really happen. The author’s purpose is to entertain. Realism: writing that tells about things that could really happen Page 6-7: Is this realism or fantasy? How do you know? What other things in the story couldn’t really happen?

5 Prepare to Read – Plot Plot is what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of a story, what the problem is, and how it is solved. Read pages 3-24 What happens in the middle and end of the story. Reread Pig Pig Gets a Job  What happens in the beginning of the story?  What clues tell you that this story is a fantasy?  What descriptive words could you use to describe these pages?

9 Grammar Verbs that tell something that is happening now or that happens regularly are in the present tense. Verbs that tell something that happened in the past are in the past tense. (past tense verbs usually end in –d or –ed) We look at pictures in our book every day. We looked at pictures in our book yesterday. The birds live in that nest. The birds lived in that nest.

10 Practice Grammar Add – d or –ed to the following verbs to make the word past tense. Then choose two verbs and write sentences in both the past and present tenses for each. play bake start wait jump skate

11 Write a Personal Narrative Personal Narrative has a beginning, middle, and end. First Draft: Write a personal narrative about learning to ride a bike. In the beginning, I’ll tell how surprised I was to get a bike for my birthday when I was eight. Then I’ll describe why the bike was so special. What should come next? I went to get my helmet, and then what? Who can add the next detail?

12 First Draft My aunt gave me a bike for my eighth birthday. I was so surprised! It was bright red, including the wheels. I could not wait to try it, so I ran and got my helmet. When I got it outside, I swung my leg over the bike. It was big! I almost did not fit. I was not sure how to get going on it. So I hopped along and tried to get up by myself. That was not a good idea! I asked my aunt to help me. She held onto the bike while I peddled. I fell a few more times, but I learned how to do it! Now, I need help to write an ending: I was so happy to be riding the bike! But then I saw the end of the road. I quickly learned how to use the brakes too!

Dad built her a bed of rags so she had a place to have the kittens. 4. She had seven kittens. The last one was Tippy. How it ended: Grandma kept Tippy and gave the rest of them away.

14 Draft Sheba’s Big Day Last summer, grandma’s cat had kittens. It was great cause we were on vacation visiting her. Sheba had her kittens the day we got there. She was acting strange. Dad helped her and built a bed of rags. Then she had her kittens. We named the last one Tippy. Grandma kept Tippy and gave the rest of them away. I can’t wate to visit grandma again. Do you think Tippy might have kittens too.
