Narratology 2 A Veil of Fantasy By Bram Janssen 100361

Thank you for the feedback! I went back to the writing table and took your advice with me. Few changes in the story’s arch. ‘Complete new’ ending.

Choice of approach for Assignment 2 I chose the story bubble approach. Added a total of 8 missions to the storyline divided over the 3 plot points & Black Moment.

Quick recap of characters Protagonist: Christopher, 14, heavily autistic, sees everything through his ‘fantasy vision’  Internal motivation: trying for once not to let down his mother.  External motivation: to find his mother (and get her back home). Antagonist: Bartholomew (Barth), 31, father, left mother b/c of Christopher, history of drinking.  Internal motivation: getting back to times where he was happy (before Christopher).  External motivation: reconciliation. Other major characters: mother, driver

Please keep in mind! 99% of the story is seen through Christopher’s eyes. This means you will see a fantasy world based on the real one. At certain times the ‘real’ world will flash to remind the player of the gravity of the situation.

- ‘Save the Cat’ You start in Christopher’s room This happens 2 / 3 times over a period of years Every time you see different Adventure related things laying around You, as Christopher, can walk around and interact with certain items to give you a little backstory info. Which triggers an internal monologue.

- ‘The Inciting Incident’ Christopher waits for his mother She doesn’t show up, even though she is always on time He makes it his ‘quest’ to find her The world changes to his imaginary world

- ‘Plot #1: State external motivation’ Christopher has an internal monologue about where is mother could be. Mission 1: Search house to find mother’s whereabouts. Interact with several items. Upon interact with refrigerator, you find numbers to call via phone. Calling mother’s work you hear busy tone. *Game continues after this* Extra objective: If you find the ‘gate key’ in a drawer, you can use this in the third mission.

- ‘Plot #1: State external motivation’ Continue After the call Christopher realises she can only be at her work, so he grabs his bike and rides to the office. Mission 2: This is a runner like mission. You have to avoid obstacles and choose the right path to get to your mother’s place of work. While cycling you notice the sun is setting and clouds gather around quickly, resulting in rain. Christopher grows increasingly worried as this is a bad omen (within his imagination).

- ‘Plot #2: the low mid-point’ Christopher arrives at the office, rain has become a downpour and the sun has set. Mission 3: Upon arrival you notice the gate is locked. You have to find a way in, which can be done in multiple ways: 1) Find a small hole in the back of the surrounding wall 2) Stacking / moving objects to create a climbable path over the wall. 3) if you found the ‘gate key’ in the first mission, you can simply open the gate.

- ‘Plot #2: the low mid-point’ Continue Christopher walks unto the parking lot. Mission 4: A stealth mission. The player must move between objects and vehicles trying to avoid the roaming security guard. The player’s objective is to reach the front door. Christopher bangs the door to no avail. He thinks all is lost, but then notices his father old rusty car. Upon recognition he figures his father might be behind his mother disappearance.

- ‘Plot #2: the low mid-point’ Continue Mission 5: The player now has to escape the parking lot. The guard heard you banging and is more actively searching for you. If you used the key to open the door, the guard has closed it, so the player has to use either one of the other 2 options to escape.

- ‘Plot #3: Hope’ Christopher remembers the length of the trip, so he jumps on his bike and starts the journey. Mission 6: Similar to mission 2, another runner mission only harder due to the darkness. Speed will increase making it harder for the player to avoid the higher obstacle count. This continues until the player fails and gets hit by a car. Christopher gets hit by a car. He has minor injuries, but his bike is ruined. He looks at his bike and realises that he can’t make it in time to save his mother.

- ‘Plot #3: Hope’ Continue After a short moment of sobbing, the driver steps out and asks if Christopher is OK. A small conversation follows (mission 7), in which Christopher realises the driver can bring him to his father’s place. Mission 7: The conversation gives the player various options to choose from. Depending on the choices several results can occur. The driver takes Christopher to his father’s place. (Success!) The driver takes Christopher to the police. (Fail) The driver takes Christopher to the hospital. (Fail) The driver is confused and leaves Christopher by the side of the road. (Fail) If succeeded: Upon arrival, he lets Christopher get out, and immediately drives off afterwards.

- ‘The Black Moment’ Christopher walks in, which is ajar. Running inside he notices his father looming over his beaten mother. His father notices him, turns around and throws a bloodied empty liquor bottle. *introduction to mission 8, you dodge it*. Mission 8: Christopher has to continuously dodge objects thrown by his father. Patterns on the floor show where the father is aiming. You can notice the mother waking up slowly which leads to the Resolution.

- ‘Resolution’ Continue mission 8: While Christopher dodges items, the mother wakes up and reaches for an object to hit the father with. Just as the father prepares a non-dodgeable attack the mother hits the father in the back of the head; knocking him unconscious. Christopher walks to his mother, upon reaching a short dialogue will follow, after which they call the police. Camera changes to outside view upon arrival of police. THE END
