5 ReadyNas Duo Overview Ships with 1 hdd, user can install second hdd
Preconfigured x-raid(*) volume, will be mirrored 2 drive x-raid volume if user adds second hdd No domain or active directory support (target market is home users, small business still encouraged to purchase NV+ or 1100 models) No network UPS sharing support (users still advised to purchase inexpensive compatible UPS) Changed to NTI Shadow Backup software X-raid: allows you to automatically expand horizontally from one drive to two drive system to make the volume redundant. Such file systems are less likely to become corrupted in the event of power failure or system crash. NOTE: Macs can support AFP, CIFS and NFS

8 SMB Vs. AFP Files copied to ReadyNas over AFP can’t be access form another Mac using SMB. And same thing backwards. Also if you want to share a share between a pc and a Mac you must use SMB. For file indexing/searching, AFP is quicker than SMB For raw data transfer speeds, CIFS is faster It is best to keep Mac shares separate from Windows shares, due to possible problems with resource forks.

10 ReadyNas Duo Drive Installation.

11 ReadyNas Duo RAIDar Installation.
Insert the CD into the pc. Click on install RAIDar option. The installation progress bar will pop up.

12 ReadyNas Duo RAIDar Installation.
Click Next Make sure to check agreement acceptance box and click next.

13 ReadyNas Duo RAIDar Installation.
Click Next, or Browse to choose where you want the RAIDar to be installed on the pc. Chooses where you want RAIDar to be displayed in your Start menu or leave it Default and click next.

Choose to display the desktop icon and quick launch icon and click Next Click finish to end the install and launch RAIDar

15 Connecting the ReadyNas Duo
Step 1: connect the power and connect the Ethernet cable to the router. Step 3: RAIDar will display the ReadyNas Duo, select the Duo and click Setup to start the set up wizard. In the log in window use admin for username and netgear1 for password.

Installed Add-Ons Section for additional add-ons such as BitTorrent, ReadyNas Photos Will be used for future add-ons created by developers and third party developers.

The menu buttons on the bottom left corner allow you to switch between advanced control and the setup wizard Advanced Control Allows you to quickly access different setting pages. Also gives you access to back up jobs, Logs and unit health.

ReadyNas Photos allow you to share your photos with other over the internet. ReadyNas Photos allows you to share photos without use of port forwarding, using proxy.

ReadyNas Photos is found in Services/Installed Click the checkbox next to ReadyNas Photos and click save to activate it. Click the install ReadyNas photos to install the software Note clicking the remove button will permanently uninstall the add-on, to disable the add on, unclick the checkbox and click save.

Choose the appropriate installer. Choose between the windows installer with JAVA or without Java. You can also download the installer for Mac OS X and Linux. Double click the ReadyNas Photos .exe file to install the software..

Add the folder with photos from the pc that you wish to share with ReadyNas Photos Click Start to begin the import process you will see the progress displayed at the bottom after few seconds.

Choose to share full album or selected photos. Enter custom message and s of people who you want to share the album with. This is what the invitation will look like in their .

41 BitTorrent Enable BitTorrent BitTorrent is found in Services/Installed
Click the checkbox next to BitTorrent and click save to activate it. What is BitTorrent? BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) communications protocol. BitTorrent allows you to download files faster by downloading from multiple sources at once. BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth.

42 BitTorrent Using BitTorrent Click on start Download Manager
Find the torrent you want to download and the complete path to the .torrent file in the url section of download manager Click the add button to start downloading the torrent file. Limitations BitTorrent URL path cannot contain the ampersand (&) symbol. If the path contains ampersand, download the torrent and use the file option to specify the torrent location.

43 BitTorrent Adding Torrents
Right click on the torrent that you want to download and copy the link. The link should look something like this: Add this link to the “” Add Torrent from URL “ field and click the add button this will start the torrent download.

44 NTI Shadow Install NTI Shadow NTI Shadow is a CDP “Continues Data Protection” NTI allows you to perform almost real-time back ups of the files on your pc and store them on your ReadyNas. NTI will also allow you to store multiple revisions of the files. NTI has the capability of you choosing which version of the file you would like to restore. Note: NTI Shadow can only back up files that are closed. If the application is still open the Shadow will not back it up. Some examples of such files are Outlook .psd files, Microsoft office files and Photoshop files. You must close the file that you are manipulating for NTI Shadow to backup the changes that have been applied to the file.

Insert the ReadyNas Duo CD and click on “Install NTI Shadow utility”

Click next in the dialogue box to continue the install Click yes for the agreement policy

Enter the Users name and the Company name, also choose if this install is only for this user or everyone to use. Choose where you would like to install the NTI Shadow software.

To restore a file click on the quick restore button, which will open the folder containing your back up. You can drag and drop the file anywhere to restore it You can right click on the file and choose Shadow restore option to restore the file to its original location or Other location To restore a specific revision of the file browse to the correct revision number they are listed as a double digit number such as Backup(00).doc and backup(01).doc.

Click On the download link for Mac OS X Photos software. if double click does not work to start the installer, the pc does not have java installed To install java type this line into the terminal on Mac OS X: # java -jar ReadyNASPhotosInstaller.jar

56 ReadyNas Photos (Mac OS X)
Double click the ReadyNas Photos installer icon Check the box to agree to the terms and click next. ReadyNas Photos will install automatically.

In Mac OS X there is no auto run for the duo CD You must double click on the CD icon to open the folder And double click on the Mac folder for all Mac OS X software..

Insert the ReadyNas Duo CD Double click on the CD which will open the folder with CD contents. Click on the Mac folder Double click the NTI Shadow.dmg This will mount the installer on your desktop. Double click the installer. Drag and drop the NTI shadow icon where you want it to be installed. Installation Finished.

59 ReadyNas RAIDar install(Mac OS X)
Double click on setup_Mac.dmg file This will mount the install volume on your desktop.

Double click RAIDar installer icon In the installer window click next.

Accept the agreement and click next. Choose the destination directory for the install and click next.

Double click on RAIDar.wdgt Click the install button to install the Widget. The Widget has the same function as RAIDar, but is more compact and easier to install.

ReadyNas Mapping Shares (Mac OS X) Connecting To The ReadyNas, Using “Connect To Server” Press Command and K and this dialogue box should appear: In this box under the Server Address, type in the ReadyNas IP address like this: smb:// The smb section can be replaced with either nfs or afp to use a different file transfer protocols.

ReadyNas Mapping Shares (Mac OS X) Connecting To The ReadyNas The log in Authentication window will pop up Provide your ReadyNas log in. Next window to pop up is to select which share to mount. Select the share you want mounted and click OK. You will see this icon appear on your desktop.

ReadyNas Mapping Shares (Mac OS X) Adding the share to the Log in items Go into the system Preferences. Select accounts under the system section. In the new window select the “Login items ” tab. Drop and drag the mapped share form the desktop into the window and the share will stay mapped the reboot.

Mapping a Share Select the ReadyNas you want to Map the share for in RAIDar and click Browse Right click on the share you want mapped and select “Map Network Drive” Select the drive letter you want the mapped share to appear in you’re my Computer with and click finish.

RAIDar does not locate the unit. RAIDar does not see the unit if the network does not use DHCP there ReadyNas will switch to default IP address A direct connection will need to be performed to connect to the unit. During the direct connection the pc IP will need to be switched to IP address to connect Now you will be able to set the ReadyNas to a static IP address within your subnet. Media streaming unit does not see the Nas Make sure the appropriate streaming service is turned under Services  Streaming services section in FrontView File System check File system check makes sure all the data in the unit is valid and is not corrupt File system checks take a few hours to complete depending on the amount of data, the unit will not fully boot up until the file system check is finished. File system checks run on regular schedule every 120 days. File system check will run after every improper shut down.

70 ReadyNas Duo Logs ReadyNas Logs
ReadyNas logs can be found in Status  Logs within FrontView The first 5 lines usually will tell you what happened to the unit last. The log will display improper shut downs, updates, drive failures, and drive additions..

71 ReadyNas Duo LED code [1 flash] Vendor mismatch – OEM unit such as TeraNas trying to install new Netgear firmware must use the Vendor ID fix add-on* [2 flashes] No disks detected – no drives in the unit or drives are bad (If drives are bad escalate case to level 2) [3 flashes] Bad contents on root partition of disks (Escalate case to Level 2) [4 flashes] Flash error – Needs a USB or TFTP boot (Escalate to level 2) [5 flashes] Unsupported RAID configuration (Currently MD disks inserted in a Duo) – user placed FlexRaid drives into the unit such as raid 0 or raid 1 * Installing the Vendor Id Fix Add-on the unit must be rebooted twice after the install
