21 Story Organizations are teams. And like every professional team, you have to have to practice. Before you can practice you have know the playbook, and before you create the playbook you have to know and understand the rules of the game. Part of being a team is knowing the season. And knowing that all seasons are cyclical and all teams face the same issues: attrition, rule changes, equipment failures, periodic validation of personnel, and every game. All teams practice and compete, all in preparation for the championship. Their seasons start off with individual skills in their respective positions. Those skills required are identified in the rule book which defines what each player is required to do. Then each team focuses on working together, learning the plays, that again follow the rules that were defined early on, so that they can compete during the season. Each team then competes, and throughout the season teammates get injured, get traded or retire, and each move changes the landscape of the team and in so changes the effectiveness or the readiness of the team. Even after the season has completed the team goes through changes, thus changing the readiness of the team for next year. Leagues review the rules, and sometimes, add rules, and other times modifies them to address the changing environment. So through this brief example we can explore how your organization faces the same challenges.
