measure the temple of God the holy city (Rev 11:1-2) And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

the holy city (Rev 11:1-2) And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. the great city where also our Lord was crucified (Rev 11:8) And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

Rebuilding the Temple II. ITS HISTORY

A. The temple’s prototype

THE TABERNACLE
13
(Exo 25:8) And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. (Exo 25:9) According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.
14
true tabernaclewhich the Lord pitched, and not man as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount (Heb 8:1-5) Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
15
(Heb 9:23) It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. (Heb 9:24) For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
16
(2Sa 7:2-5) That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee. And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?
17
(1Ch 22:6-10) Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel. And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God: But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight. Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days. He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.

B. The 1 st temple (Solomon’s)
19
NOTESNOTES Solomon begin to build this temple c. 966 BC and completed it in 7 years (1 Kings 6:1,38) He brings in all of the instruments that David had dedicated (1 Kings 7:51) When the Ark is brought in, the “Cloud” (glory of the Lord) enters the building After Solomon dedicates the building in a prayer, God makes a promise…
20
(1Ki 9:3) And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
21
NOTESNOTES At this point you have the Son of David siting on the throne and the whole world coming to this temple… (2Ch 9:23) And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon, to hear his wisdom, that God had put in his heart. Solomon then took over a 1,000 women in and they turned his heart to other God’s and the country turn away from the Lord The temple was destroyed by the evading army of Nebuchadnezzar This took place in 586 BC

C. The 2 nd temple (Zerubabbel’s or Maccabees)
24
(Ezr 3:10-13) And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the ordinance of David king of Israel. And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy: So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.
25
NOTESNOTES This temple was completed 70 years (516 BC) after the destruction of the 1 st temple. In 167 BC a man named Antiochus Epiphanes comes in and desecrates this temple by offering a pig on the altar. At the same time slaughters thousands of Jews in the temple. At this time he also dedicated it as a shrine to Zeus.
26
NOTESNOTES 2 years later a Jew named Judas Maccabee leads a army in and defeats Antiochus. The temple is then rededicated to the Lord
27
D. The 3 rd temple (Herod’s)
28
NOTESNOTES Herod the Great comes in around 63 BC and captures the city. In 20 BC Herod orders the temple rebuilt in order to find favor with the Jews. It was in building for over 46 years at the time of Christ’s cleansing. But doesn’t get finished until 64 AD just 6 years before the destruction by the Roman general Titus. (Matt 24:1-2)
30
E. The 4 th temple (Tribulation)
31
NOTESNOTES There are several prophecies in the bible that in order to be fulfilled, there must be a real physical temple rebuilt in Jerusalem by the midway of the tribulation
32
(Dan 9:27) And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. (Mat 24:15-16) When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
33
(2Th 2:4) Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
34
NOTESNOTES To fulfill the prophecy there must be… 1.The Jews must be in the Land (1948) 2.They must control Jerusalem (1967) 3.There must be a Temple built by the Mid way of the tribulation (?)

Ezk. 40-48

(Isa 2:2-4) And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD'S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
38
(Mic 4:1-2) But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
39
(Hag 2:7-9) And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
40
(Zec 6:12-13) And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.
41
F. The 6 th temple (Eternity)
42
(Isa 6:1-3) In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
