LS1.A: Structure and Function
Big Picture LS1.A: Structure and Function All living things are made up of cells, which is the smallest unit that can be said to be alive. An organism may consist of one single cell (unicellular) or many different numbers and types of cells (multicellular).

Objectives: Describe how tissues, organs, and organ systems are related. List 11 major organ systems. Identify how organ systems work together to maintain homeostasis. Learning Target Today I will: learn about how tissues make up organs and organ systems in the human body So that I can: understand how organ systems maintain the human body. I will know I got it if: I can name and describe the organ systems in the human body. Agenda Today we will: Complete a do now Watch a video Complete a group activity and individual activity Exit ticket Vocabulary cell tissue organ homeostasis

Cells, Tissues, and Organs
The many kinds of cells in your body help your internal environment stay stable. The maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment is called homeostasis.
6
Cells, Tissues, and Organs, continued
Cells Form Tissues A group of similar cells working together forms a tissue. Your body has four main kinds of tissue.
7
Cells, Tissues, and Organs, continued
Tissues Form Organs Two or more tissues working together to carry out a specialized function form an organ.

Organs Form Systems Organs that work together make up an organ system.
Working Together Organs Form Systems Organs that work together make up an organ system. Organ systems work together to maintain homeostasis. Your body has 11 major organ systems.

Systems continued… integumentary system: skin, hair and nails protect tissues beneath them. muscular system: works with skeletal to help you move. skeletal system: bones provide a frame to support and protect body parts. cardiovascular system: your heart pumps blood through all of you vessel.
11
respiratory system: lungs absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
Systems continued… respiratory system: lungs absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. urinary system: removes waste from blood and regulates body fluids. reproductive system: male produces sperm and female produces eggs.
12
Systems continued… nervous system: receives and sends electrical messages throughout body. digestive system: breaks down food you eat into nutrients that body can absorb. lymphatic system: returns leaked fluids to blood vessels and helps get rid of viruses and bacteria. endocrine system: glands send out chemical messages. Ovaries and testes are part of this system.
