Scientists and Their Contributions
Hooke – named cells from a piece of cork (dead plant) Leeuwenhoek – invented the first microscope and discovered bacteria Schleiden – said plants are made of cells Schwann – said animals are made of cells Louis Pasteur – pasteurization ---first to show that living things come only from living things. His discovery that bacteria spread diseases saved countless lives.
5
The Cell Theory 1. All living things are made of cells. 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. (structure = form; function = purpose) 3. Living cells only come from other living cells.
6
What are cells? An organism is made of organ systems.
Organ systems are made up of organs Organs are made up of tissues Tissues are made up of CELLS! Organ System Organ Tissue Cells!!!!
7
Can you remember the function of each?
Cell membrane – allows only certain things into the cell Cell wall – only plants – gives support Nuclear membrane – protects the nucleus Vacuole – stores waste– super huge in plant cells Nucleus – controls the cell – contains DNA

The Difference between Animal & Plant Cells

Vocabulary you should know
Prokaryotic cell Prokaryotes are single-celled organisms that are the earliest and most primitive forms of life on earth. Bacteria Bacteria consist of only a single cell Virus A virus is a small infectious agent that can only replicate inside the cells of another organism.
