Common Nouns Common nouns do not name specific persons, places, or things. Most nouns are common nouns. They are not capitalized (unless they come at the beginning of a sentence). Examples: teacher, friend, president, actor. school, state, city, bank. cat, book, movie, dog.

Proper Nouns Proper nouns name specific persons, places, or things. They are almost always capitalized (even in the middle of a sentence. Examples: Ms. Littler, Casey, Barack Obama, Chris Pratt American Prep Academy, Utah, Draper, Wells Fargo Felix, Harry Potter, The Avengers, Spot
