Summer School Cooperation How can we organise a summer school in cooperation with our partner universities?

Summer Schools and IRUN
3
Building Block Summer School: -University of Barcelona -University of Glasgow -University of Munster -Radboud University -Peter Pazmany University of Budapest Discussion paper “How can we cooperate in the field of summer schools” Just a start: a long list of ideas.
4
1. Promotion of each other Summer Schools Include summer schools of partners in newsletters, websites, etc Pros We help each other recruiting students for our Summer Schools. Everybody profits. Relatively easy to implement. No budget involved. Short term commitment only. Effect is measurable. Cons Might have a competitive effect for your own Summer School. Dependency on the cooperation of communication department. Only works if everybody commits to the promotion of each other Summer Schools
5
Pros Concrete benefit for students. Can be used both by the “host university” and the “home university” for promotional purposes. Cons Less income for the receiving Summer School (course). Feasibility depends on the business cases of the various Summer Schools. Who decides on pricing (and discounts) in the university? 2. Discount for IRUN students
6
3. “Code sharing” of existing course An existing course at university A is also offered by university B, but takes place only at university A. Pros In role of university A: partner helps you recruit students In role of university B: It can help profiling your own Summer School Relatively easy to implement Cons Needs clear understanding and detailed agreement on registration procedures and, if relevant, recruitment fees
7
4. Real sharing of existing course An existing course in university A will be implemented again in university B. This can be in the same year or, for example, in alternating years. Pros Relatively easy to implement, no development of new content needed Real enlargement/enrichment of the Summer School offer on campus Cons Conditions (organisation structure, time slots, finances,...) might be different in the two Summer Schools, it is not simply copy and paste.
8
5. Developing a joint course between two partners Staff members of two IRUN universities develop a new Summer School course together. It will be delivered in one or both universities, preferably by academic staff from both universities. Pros Real enlargement/enrichment of the Summer School offer on campus Can be linked to other (research) cooperation Cons Development of new content needed Needs support of the academic staff. Additional costs involved (e.g. development costs, travel costs) What is the added value for students compared with a course that is developed by one university only?
9
6. Developing an truly IRUN Summer School course A new course will be developed with the label “IRUN Summer School Course”. All IRUN partners jointly “own” the course Pros Real enlargement/enrichment of the respective Summer Schools Combining strength of IRUN partners Possibilities to create added value Cons Development of new content needed Needs support of academic and supports staff. Additional costs involved (development costs, travel) Who owns the course? Who is responsible?
10
7. Merger of all IRUN Summer Schools courses All courses of all Summer Schools of all IRUN partners will be put together in one pan-European IRUN Summer School Pros This will instantly become the largest, most renowned and popular Summer School of the European continent, attracting thousands of participants, especially from countries outside Europe! Cons Dream on.
