2007-08 Wellness Policy Implementation Plan Presentation to the Board of Education August 28, 2007

Background & Purpose Background 2005-06 Board approved Wellness Policy 2006-07 Administrative regulations integrated into the Board policy 2007-08 Implementation Plan Purpose To foster wellness across the District for all, particularly the link between student health and learning according to the 8 components of a coordinated school health program

Component #1: Comprehensive Health Education - students develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed for a lifelong commitment to health Elementary: Staff development: class meetings for Caring School Communities & Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender (LGBT) awareness training (per AB 537) and curriculum development Implement new 3-year grant cycle for Network for Healthy CA Funding

Component #1: Comprehensive Health Education Secondary: Review, refine and update high school course Current Life Issues All: Review the 2006-07 results of the CA Healthy Kids Survey program improvement Revise other related administrative regulations

Component #2: Physical Education, Physical Activity, & Athletics - students participate in a comprehensive & sequentially planned physical education program leading to lifelong enjoyment of physical activity Elementary: Review with schools appropriate recess schedules per revised AR 6142 Physical Education “There shall be a minimum of two 10-minute recess periods per full day at elementary sites, in addition to lunch recess.” All: K-12 PE Standards training

Component #3: Health Services - health-related procedures, screenings or referrals coordinated at the schools Elementary: Review and ensure all students with high risk health needs New requirement for diabetes care Review/align health office assistants’ schedules Implement oral health assessments for K-1 students All: Revise all mandated Board policies Develop process for new Board policies

Component #4: Nutrition Services - promotes practice of good eating habits All: Implement “healthy foods initiative” at all school sites Implement competitive food sales and fundraisers per policy Provide clarity & support for implementation to parents, students, and staff

Component #5: Mental Health & Social Services - student support and assistance in making healthy decisions, managing emotions, coping with crises Secondary: Professional development for counselors, particularly at-risk counselors Guidance counseling Academic counseling Post-secondary counseling Crisis counseling

Component #6: Healthy School Environment - teaching by example & promoting the health of all adults in the school Elementary: LGBT training (AB 537) for staff LGBT lessons and resources Secondary: Review/refine discipline procedures & clearly communicate it to staff and families Research violence prevention programs for middle schools

Component #7: Health Promotion for Staff - promotes a safe physical & emotional environment All: Research wellness programs Research & make available wellness resources, facilities and services

Component #8: Family, School & Community Partnership - involvement encourages positive health behaviors in children All: Meet with PTA Council to clarify wellness policy Establish Wellness Advisory/Implementation Committee-first meeting September 27th Implement mini garden grants Report to the Board of Education June 2008
