Minorities A group of people with physical or cultural traits different from those of the dominant group in the society.

What does this mean? Distinctive physical or cultural characteristics that separate it from the majority Dominated by the majority Believed to be inferior by majority Common sense of identity and loyalty Majority decides who belongs

Race People sharing certain inherited physical characteristics that are considered important within a society

Do you associate with a race? What is the determining factor? Skin color? Hair? Height?

Ethnicity Ethnic minority Group identified by cultural, religious, or national characteristics Others?

Ethnocentrism One more time…… Judging others in terms of one’s own cultural standards Not just Americans… Isolationist Asia

Racial and Ethnic Relations Assimilation Blending or fusing of minority groups into dominant society Members are given full participation in society Conflict 3 basic patters throughout history include genocide, population transfer, and subjugation
