2 New England Take-aways
The colonies of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Company were founded for religious purposes. Massachusetts Bay was intolerant of non-Puritans and those that questioned the way that the colony was operated. Massachusetts Bay was a virtual theocracy.

3 Connecticut Founded by Thomas Hooker, who believed that Mass. Bay’s government had too much power. Set up the Fundamental Orders All male property owners could vote Limited the power of the governor

4 Rhode Island Founded by Roger Williams
He too believed the church had too much power. Believed in complete separation of church and state. Practiced religious toleration

5 Conflicts with the Native
As New England’s population grows due to the Great Migration so does the tension between settlers and natives. Also, a war breaks out between France and England and causes New Englanders to seek refuge in new colonies.

6 Salem Mass hysteria, paranoia, and old world traditions leads to witch hunts. This is comparable to the Red Scare of the 1950s. If you were accused of being a communist and couldn’t prove that you weren’t your life would be ruined.

7 Governing Traditions Town Meetings = Took place at the local level, comparable to a functioning direct democracy. Still practiced in small segments of New England today.
