1. Argumentative writing / public speaking is based on evidence (facts and data) – not opinions! So carefully choose your sources!

2.  Use a reliable database. NOTE: For this project, you will use PIONEER, SIRS Issues Researcher.

3.  Look for - solid facts, - good examples, - helpful anecdotes (stories or accounts), - insightful quotes (from experts), - accepted definitions, and - clear explanations.

4. Avoid broad or general information, opting instead of specific details.  Gather evidence for ALL points of view on your topic – pros and cons – not just your position. You’ll have to present them fairly in your logical argument, so get to know them well through research!

5.  Document your sources. Keep track of ALL necessary information on them... and from them!

6. Go to the internet; use school link to “PIONEER Library” or type in address pioneer.uen.org. NOTE: If you are at school, the site will come up without requiring a login name and password. If you are NOT at school, the site will require that you enter them. They are: Login Name: pioneer Password: student

7. Next, go to “General Reference Collection.)” Click on SIRS Issues Researcher (NOT SIRS Discoverer!). Locate your approved / assigned topic and click on it. Then click on links to get to recommended pro and con sources which match Essential Questions. Also check out general sources to see if any apply and are useful.
