The Death Penalty (Capital Punishment) What crimes, if any should carry the death penalty? Is death penalty worse than life imprisonment? Should a Christian be for or against the death penalty? STATISTICS Approx half the countries in the world (88) have got rid of it completely Only 9 countries use it regularly as a form of punishment. 99% of Sun readers in 2008 voted in favour of returning the death penalty to the UK. 1800 people are executed a year.

Catholic teaching on Capital Punishment (Death Penalty) The Bible teaches that every person is made in the image of God. Even the dignity of a criminal must be upheld & his life considered sacred. The teaching of the Church is “The death penalty is cruel and unnecessary”. Pope John Paul II, 1999 “The Catholic Church does not forbid the death penalty, if it is the only way of effectively defending human lives from an unjust aggressor.” Catechism 1.Write out the Catholic view of punishment, 2.Explain 2 pieces of evidence in support of this view. 3.Which piece of evidence is the strongest argument against it? Why? The Bible teaches it is wrong to kill. (5 th Commandment) Jesus taught non-violence and forgiveness eg woman in adultery, forgive “77 times”, Lord’s prayer.

In the middle of your poster, write the title: – Should Capital Punishment be allowed as a form of punishment in the UK? – Use the same colour for the same point of view – Take turns with your partner to write arguments for/ against (you may swap sides during the “debate” – Try to respond to what your partner has written with a counter-argument – If you cannot, start off a new point
