6 The OES Survey Process  BLS samples 1.2 million companies – Nationwide – 3 year period  LMI samples 23,000 companies – Statewide – 3 year period

11 The OES Survey Process  BLS sends “rough” file to State  Address cleanup -Is company still in business? -Are address and contact person correct? -Any changes since sample pulled -Phone or mail contact  “Clean” file sent to BLS  National printing sends out forms

15 How the OES Survey Data is processed  Responses are edited for: –Correct number of employees –Appropriate wages and wage ranges –Occupations fit the industry  Responses are edited, coded and entered into SPAM (Survey Processing And Management)  End-of-Month reports sent to BLS  End-of-Survey master file sent to BLS

16 How the OES Survey Data is processed  BLS reviews and edits master file -BLS sends questions back to state -State answers questions and responds  BLS aggregates wage & employment data  BLS publishes data on web

22 How OES survey data can be used  Example using SOC (Standard Occupation Codes) six digit code: -First two digits represent major group 11 = Management -Third digit represents minor group 11-3 = operations specialties manager -Fourth and fifth digits represent broad occupation 11-303 = administrative services manager -Sixth digit represents detailed occupation 11-3031 = financial manager
