12 Basic v Applied Research OECD “A clear distinction between the roles of Institutes of Technology and Universities in research” “The role of the institutes of Technology should be much more targeted towards particular areas of applied research so that they can act as technology development partners to industry, especially SMEs, particularly on a regional or even a national basis.” SSTI Report (2006 - 2013) “Under this strategy, EI, in conjunction with the HEA, will work with the IOTs to develop that focus (applied research)…”

13 Next Steps R & D Targeted investment is required to build on areas of research capacity in strategic areas within each institute. 18 Regional Innovation “The Institutes of Technology represent an important resource in this context” It is a key in the area where there is only one provider

19 Interaction with Enterprise “The Institutes of Technology are well placed to support enterprise through technical consulting and collaboration on close-to-market applied research projects. However, given the structural challenges of SME’s, the Institutes must take a proactive outreaching role to make this a reality”“The Institutes of Technology are well placed to support enterprise through technical consulting and collaboration on close-to-market applied research projects.
