It lies south-east off Asia. It covers the area of about 7 700 000 sq. kilometres. Australia is almost as large as the USA. The eastern coast of Australia is washed by the Pacific Ocean and the west coast by the Indian.  Tasmania lies 240 km south.  Nearest is Indonesia, Papua New Guinea in the north.  Fiji is in the east and New Zealand is south-east off Australia.

Sometimes there are floods typhoons  In the central and western parts of Australia, there are long periods of dry weather. Sometimes there are floods (povodně) and typhoons (tajfuny) on the north-west and east coasts.GEOGRAPHY the smallest, youngest continent, with the lowest population density Southern Hemisphere  Australia is the smallest, youngest continent, with the lowest population density and lying in the Southern Hemisphere between the Indian and the Pacific Oceans.

SURFACE the Great Western Plateau three big deserts - the Great Sandy Desert, the Gibson Desertthe Great Victoria Desert.  Nearly half of the continent occupies the Great Western Plateau on the west, in central part there are also three big deserts - the Great Sandy Desert, the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert.

MOUNTAINS the Great Dividing Range the Australian AlpsMount Kasciusco  East part occupies the Great Dividing Range and in the south-east there are the Australian Alps with the highest mountain Mount Kasciusco. Its height is 2 230 m.
