What Does it Matter
2
Everything Is Made of Matter
What is Matter? Matter is anything that has volume and mass. What is volume? Volume is the amount of space taken up or occupied by an object What is mass? Mass is the amount of matter that something is made of
3
Volume is: Liquid volume is measured with a graduated cylinder Volume can be expressed in milliliters (ml) or cubic centimeters (cm3).
4
How Do You Determine the Volume of a solid?
The volume of a regular shaped solid can be determined by multiplying its length by its width by its height
5
What about the volume of an irregular solid---like a rock??
Read liquid volume in a graduated cylinder Place irregular shaped solid in graduated Water will rise or displace Reread the water level in the graduated cylinder Subtract the new reading from the original reading This is the volume of the irregular solid
6
How about the volume of a gas. Or How about the mass of a gas
How about the volume of a gas?? Or How about the mass of a gas?? What is Mass?
7
expressed in kilograms (kg), grams (g), and milligrams (mg).
Mass is: a measure of the amount of matter in an object. always constant for an object no matter where the object is in the universe. expressed in kilograms (kg), grams (g), and milligrams (mg).
8
How do you measure the mass of matter?
You use a balance to measure mass For solids, you place object on balance and read its mass
9
How do you find the mass of a liquid or gas?
Measure the mass of a container Place liquid or gas in container Reread the mass of the container Subtract this mass from the original mass This is the mass of your liquid or gas
10
Did You Know?? The volume of the sun is about 1 million times larger than the volume of the Earth. The volume of a raindrop is 0.09ml, which means that it would take almost 4, raindrops to fill a soda can.
