Introduction Every day hundreds of thousands of high school students are looking for jobs on daily basis. They are using all different methods of job search from newspaper, hiring agencies, or Internet. Once the person has decided what type of job (s)he is looking for they have to fill an application to define themselves and state their expectations and goals. The application is like a virtual interview. After filling the application, students will be able to determine if they are prepared for the world of work. For most employment situations, the application will act as a FIRST IMPRESSION. If your application gives a POSITIVE impression you may be on your way to an interview which could result in a job offer.

Why WebQuest? 1) One way to recruit new employees is through the internet 2) More and more job seekers turn to the internet to find new job possibilities 3) Allow students to utilize tools that have been taught in class 4) Allow students that have not yet considered career options the forum to research possible careers 5) Allow students that know their career path the ability to see how their future will unfold based on the selection that they have chosen

Learning theory This WebQuest uses the constructivist approach to learning and requires that students use: Communication Group work Problem-solving Critical and creative thinking skills. Students can work independently which allows the instructor to be a facilitator in the students’ learning process

The Task 1.Identify their basic skill set. 2.Identify an occupation that matches their skill set. 3.Research what the occupation is and what people do. 4.Search for available jobs for this occupation 5.Analyze and understand the particular requirements for the job identified. 6.Develop a presentation on their job search.

The Task (Cont’d) 7. Students will evaluate their resume and apply all of the information in the web sites to complete the application. 8. Print a copy of the Job Application Sheet to help them navigate their way through the world of employment decisions.

The Process Step 1 Navigate to http://online.onetcenter.org/http://online.onetcenter.org/ Select “Search Skills”, which directs the student to http://online.onetcenter.org/gen_skills_page http://online.onetcenter.org/gen_skills_page Read the directions and complete the form by identifying the skills that the student has. Print this page with the skills identified Select the “Go” button, which directs the student to http://online.onetcenter.org/skills_search http://online.onetcenter.org/skills_search Review the list of occupations that match the students skill set and select an occupation that is of interest. Click on the “Summary” button next to the occupation name. Review this description of the Occupation. Print this Occupation description page.

The Process Step 2 Navigate to http://www.careeronestop.org/http://www.careeronestop.org/ Select “Search Job Listings” under the Jobseekers column, which will direct the student to http://www.ajb.org/http://www.ajb.org/ Use the Quick Search feature by –In the “Enter Keyword(s)” box, enter the name of the occupation –In “Step 2” select the “Entire United States” radio button. –This will take the student to a listing of jobs that match or call for that occupation –Print a copy of the job listing results Select an interesting job and the student will be directed to a job details page Print the job details page. Prepare a resume Prepare a cover letter or complete the job application Complete the attached PowerPoint presentation either in handwriting or on the computer. Attach the printed sheets from the PowerPoint to the presentation.

Learners This lesson is anchored for students in high school. Teachers using this WebQuest must know that their audience might not be able to work on their own. Some of them might need guidance. Teachers Should explain the concept of Job Search using Internet and WebQuest.

Curriculum Standards - 1 1 1- TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS. Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Teachers: Ø demonstrate introductory knowledge, skills, and understanding of concepts related to technology (as described in the ISTE National Education Technology Standards for Students) Ø demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies. 2 2- PLANNING AND DESIGNING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND EXPERIENCES. Resources Needed For this lesson each student will need the following : Access to a computer workstation that supports MicroSoft applications Explorer, PowerPoint and Word. A connection for each workstation to the Internet Access and connection to a printer Students may use the Resume Wizard in MS Word It may be helpful for the lead teacher to work in conjunction with a media specialist or a lab technician, to maximize individual student time and resources
