Ethics 1. Happy Photo After work you and some buddies go to a restaurant for dinner and drinks. While you are there, the waiter takes a picture with your cell phone of the group at the table (all happily smiling with beer mugs in your hands). You place the picture on Instagram and Facebook to share with your family and family. The next day you wake up and realize that you were still wearing your City’s labeled work shirt.

Ethics 2. Family Contractor A contractor that you often use to complete work projects recently hired your cousin. You are told that your cousin will be now be the company representative to your department, which means you will be working with her on several city projects.

Ethics 3. Budget Dilemma Your Department Head asked you to present the department budget to the City Council. You will be asked to justify your department’s budget request for additional personnel, but the data only partially support it. In fact, there is even contradictory data.

Ethics 4. Tickets to the concert Your boss gives you tickets to a concert to the flock of Seagulls, an awesome New Wave 80s Band. You believe that the tickets were given to your boss by a vendor.

Ethics 5. Financial struggles One of your best accountants has been under a great deal of pressure and has taken out more loans than he can handle. Trying to be supportive, you have talked to him about consolidating his loans. Another one of your accountants has approached you to discuss accounting procedures. The more you hear, the more concerned you become about a possible impropriety. You begin to look into the matter quietly, and find some evidence of abuse. You become convinced that your financially troubled employee has embezzled some city funds. So far, only a very small amount of money, less than $100, appears to be involved. You would hate for this accountant to leave the department because you have two existing vacancies and the year end reports are due in two weeks. Without his help you know that you will be unable to meet the deadline. In addition, he is your best employee.

Ethics 6. The Job Applicant You have been interviewing candidates to fill positions as summer recreation leaders. The deadline for applications was last week, and you expect to complete interviews in the next five days. This morning you had a disturbing phone call from the mayor’s niece. She said she’d like to talk to you about the recreation leader openings, and that she would stop by in the afternoon. You agreed to talk with her even though you had told several other callers that the deadline for applications had passed. Now you’re having second thoughts. You know the mayor would expect you to talk to her niece, but you’re not sure whether it is fair to consider her for one of the summer jobs.
