1 Lab Equipment

2 Beaker Normally made of glass. A cup like device used mainly for heating up a liquid.

3 Beakers hold solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated.

4 The narrow neck makes it easy to mix substances without spilling.
Erlenmeyer Flask A cup like device that is pyramidal shaped. The narrow neck makes it easy to mix substances without spilling.

5 Erlenmeyer flasks hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated.

6 Florence Flask Rarely used in first year chemistry, it is used for the mixing of chemicals. Narrow neck prevents splash exposure.

7 A florence flask is a volumetric flask.

8 Volumetric A volumetric device is calibrated to measure a specific amount. Usually only one mark is on it to indicate when you have reached that amount.

9 Wide Mouthed Bottle A device that usually has no marking that is good for any kind of storage. Also known as a gas collecting bottle.

10 We use gas collecting bottles when large volumes of gases are produced, and must be collected by the displacement of water.

11 Used to separate polar compounds that have separated into layers.
Separatory Funnel Used to separate polar compounds that have separated into layers.

12 A bottle which should contain distilled water for use and cleaning.
Wash Bottle A bottle which should contain distilled water for use and cleaning.

13 A device used to measure the amount of heat
Thermometer A device used to measure the amount of heat

14 Stirring Rod is used to manually stir solutions. It can also be used to transfer a single drop of a solution.

15 designed for cleaning the inside of glassware
designed for cleaning the inside of glassware. There are different sizes for each type of glassware. Cleaning Brush

16 are used to pick up small objects.
Forceps are used to pick up small objects.

17 is useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle.
Test Tube Tongs is useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle.

18 Striker are used to light Bunsen burners. The flints on strikers are expensive. Do not operate the striker repeatedly just to see the sparks!

19 For handling hot crucibles; also used to pick up other hot objects
For handling hot crucibles; also used to pick up other hot objects. NOT to be used for picking up beakers! Crucible Tongs

20 Extension Clamp Used on a stand or pole, it clamps something further out or used when more clamps are needed.

21 Buret Clamp Also known as test tube clamps or utility clamps. Utility clamps are used to secure test tubes, distillation columns, and burets to the ringstand.

22 Used to hold the extension clamp.
Clamp Holder Used to hold the extension clamp.

23 Dropping Pipet is used to transfer a small volume of liquid (usually less than one mL).

24 are used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids
are used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids. Is fueled by some type of gas. Bunsen Burner

25 Watch Glass is used to hold a small amount of solid, such as the product of a reaction.

26 sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker.
Wire Gauze sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker.

27 Crucible are used for heating certain solids, particularly metals, to very high temperatures.

28 is used as a support for porcelain crucibles when being heated over a Bunsen burner.
Triangle

29 Used to grind stuff into a fine powder.
Mortar and Pestle Used to grind stuff into a fine powder.

30 Evaporating Dish is used for the heating of stable solid compounds and elements. Also used to separate a solid suspended in a liquid by boiling away the liquid.

31 is used to measure volumes of liquids.
Graduated Cylinder is used to measure volumes of liquids.

32 Volumetric Flask A flask which holds a specific amount of liquid. Is used to mix ppm and ppb solutions.

33 measures and delivers exact volumes of liquids.
Graduated Pipet measures and delivers exact volumes of liquids.

34 A pipet which will measure a specific amount of liquid.
Volumetric Pipet A pipet which will measure a specific amount of liquid.

35 Buret A long graduated tube used to hold liquid and release the liquid with extreme control. Most often used in neutralizing a base.

36 Condenser A device used to condense a gas into a liquid by surrounding the gas with a cool liquid. Running water is most often used.

37 Used as a safe and convenient way to perform reactions that require heating using a Bunsen burner.
Stand

38 Rings connect to a stand and provide a stable, elevated platform for the reaction.

39 is used to aid in the transfer of liquid from one vessel to another.
Funnel is used to aid in the transfer of liquid from one vessel to another.

40 Tubular devices used for mixing, and/or heating stuff together.
Test Tubes Tubular devices used for mixing, and/or heating stuff together.

41 Test Tube Rack are for holding and organizing test tubes on the laboratory counter. Plastic racks may melt in contact with very hot test tubes.

42 Rubber Stoppers are used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination.Containers should never be heated when there is a stopper in place.

43 Spot Plates are used when we want to perform many small scale reactions at one time.

44 Litmus Paper Red litmus paper is used to identify bases.
Blue litmus paper is used to identify acids.

45 are used to weigh solids that will be transferred to another vessel.
Weighing Boat are used to weigh solids that will be transferred to another vessel.

46 are used to dispense solid chemicals from their containers
are used to dispense solid chemicals from their containers. Chemicals should never be transferred with your bare hands. Spatulas

47 are used to move beakers containing hot liquids
Beaker Tongs are used to move beakers containing hot liquids

48 are used primarily to cut glass rod
Triangular File are used primarily to cut glass rod

49 Designed to hold two burets to make titration easier.
Double Buret Clamps Designed to hold two burets to make titration easier.

50 Pressed Fiber Pad A 4” x 4” square of ceramic fiber, it provides a surface for hot beakers so that the beaker does not come in contact with a cold countertop and shatter.

51 Capillary Action is the ability of a narrow tube to draw a liquid upwards against the force of gravity.

52 is a curve in the surface of a liquid, produced in response to the surface of the container or another object. It can be either concave or convex. Meniscus
