Hundreds of years ago, different countries used different systems of measurement.

Most scientists in almost all countries use the International System of Units, also known as SI. This is the metric system.

To find the Kelvin temperature, add 273 to the Celcius temperature.

Metric Volume The amount of space an object takes up is the volume.
The metric units of volume are milliliter and liter. Milliliters can also be expressed as cubic centimeters (cm³).

A liter is a little more than a quart.
A few drops of water would be a milliliter.

One liter contains 1000 milliliters or 1000 cm³.
For water: 1 milliliter = 1 centimeter cubed = 1 gram OR 1 mL = 1 cm³ = 1 g

Metric Length The distance between two points.
Measured with a ruler or meterstick. A meter is slightly longer than a yard.

A meter is the distance from the floor to a doorknob or the length of a baseball bat.

0.01 (one-hundredth) of a meter is a centimeter (cm).
A centimeter is about the diameter of a shirt button or the diameter of the colored part of the eye. Also the width of the pinky finger.

To measure very small items, use the millimeter.
It is the thickness of a dime. Another example is the tip of a pencil lead.

When we measure very long distances, we use the kilometer.
The tallest building in the world is less than ½ of a kilometer. The kilometer is used to measure distance between cities.
