* After WWII people in America were ready to have goods they were not able to enjoy during wartime * In War factories must produce items for war * Now that war was over there was a change!!!

* With the war being over, and gasoline no longer being a scarce commodity (item) many Georgians fulfilled their dream of owning a car. * As a result suburban growth skyrocketed. * People could now work in the city and drive home. * Also there was a growth of Drive-ins, such as movies and restaurants.

* There are several reasons that farming began to decrease. * View the Chart on p.320 * The GI Bill-Congress provided benefits for returning soldiers * Four years of college, low interest home/farm/ business loans, and $20 a week in unemployment

* The GI Bill meant that there was a focus on development and family * College-means less farms! * Baby Boom!-Why were children born during this time period called baby boomers?

* Because there were so many children born during this era.

* Tenant farming declined after WWII * Many people moved to other states- many of these were black individuals in need of work and opportunity * However, there was also a rush of business that took place in Georgia

* Transportation hub of the south * Favorable weather * Workers were not unionized-means cheap labor * Low Taxes * All of these meant good things for business! * View Map on P. 321

* The origins and beginnings of the Cold War can technically be traced to 1945 following WWII with the words of George Orwell. * However in reality and in the public eye the cold war did not fully develop and establish itself until 1949.

* Many things occurred but mainly we see the emergence of nuclear testing by the Soviets. * The demonstration of nuclear power officially ends the American monopoly on atomic warfare and therefore, warfare and diplomacy is forever changed in 1949.

* The arms race and military preparedness brought in giant businesses such as Martin- Marietta (leader in chemicals, aerospace, and electronics) employing thousands of Georgians. Military outposts also created thousands of jobs in places such as Dobbins, Warner Robins, and Fort Benning.
