2 Objectives Recognize WCN as resource for nursing workforce data Present role of WCN in leading the Future of Nursing™ Campaign for Action in Wisconsin Share current initiatives on nursing workforce data as relates to key message #4 in the IOM report

3 Mission Assure an adequate, well- prepared and diverse nurse workforce to meet the needs of the citizens of Wisconsin

4 Vision Wisconsin will have a nursing workforce that is: diverse sufficient in number appropriately educated effectively utilized, and adequately supported

5 History of WCN 2001 – Nursing leaders with a vision for collaboration & redesign 2001-2004 - Awareness, communication, partnerships, funding 2005 – WCN established & Board of Directors appointed 2006 – Hired first full-time Executive Director 2006 - Website created: www.wicenterfornursing.org www.wicenterfornursing.org - 2006 - Established 501(c)(3) status

6 History of WCN, continued 2007 - Advisory Council established 2007 – RWJF Partners Investing in Nursing (PIN) grant – Faye McBeath Foundation partnership 2008 – Medical College of WI - Healthier WI Partnership Program grant 2009 – Successful legislation to collect, analyze & disseminate nursing workforce data for a statewide plan 2010 – Wisconsin RN Survey – Historical ‘first’ survey of 77,553 nurses 2011 – Wisconsin LPN Survey & Education Survey 2011 – Website redesign

10 WCN Strategic Priorities Strengthening our capacity to bring together multiple nursing interest into one coherent platform and message around workforce issues Leading the Wisconsin response to the Institute of Nursing (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing Critically analyzing and disseminating nursing workforce data Ultimate product: Statewide Nursing Workforce plan by June 2013

11 Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 106.30 Mandated re-licensure surveys Designated state nursing center Develop strategies to ensure a nursing workforce that is adequate to meet the current & future health care needs of this state

12 Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 106.30 Monitoring trends Evaluating the effectiveness of nursing education programs in increasing access to those programs Enhancing career mobility for nurses especially in underrepresented populations of nurses Facilitating partnerships between the nursing community and other health care providers Promote diversity within the nursing profession Enhance leadership development for nurses Achieve consensus regarding policies aimed at ensuring adequate nursing workforce in this state.

15 Future of Nursing & IOM in Wisconsin – Initial Efforts October, 2010 Littlefield Lecture Series – UW Madison School of Nursing; Donna Shalala keynote speaker. May, 2011 – Wisconsin Dells – “The IOM Report: Building the Future of Nursing in Wisconsin” sponsored by WCN and WNC 229 participants; 24 baccalaureate & ADN programs Keynote speakers: Peter Buerhaus, Vanderbilt University & Ellen Murphy UWM Regional breakout groups

16 Wisconsin – Action Coalition Nursing leadership in WI approached WCN to apply for Action Coalition status One per state; consistent, unified reporting Application requirement for local nursing organization PLUS ‘non-nurse entity’ Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative partnership Action Coalition status granted September 6, 2011 Outreach to other non-nursing groups critical

17 Wisconsin – Action Coalition Faye McBeath Foundation - $15,000 start up money for Action Coalition activities Opportunity to mobilize nursing & non-nursing partners to implement IOM recommendations Utilize data already being gathered & analyzed Perfect timing for all to come together Synergistic outcomes
