One Strike Rule any point that you are goofing around or unsafe, you are out! - And you get a zero on the lab

It is important that you are well prepared for the lab. Read the entire procedure before beginning the lab. Listen to all instructor directions. If you are in doubt, read directions, ask partner, then ask your instructor for help. No Horsing around in lab #1 Rule?Follow all directions!

a. Read all directions BEFORE acting Read all directions Read each step carefully as you go Read first Read, then do Don’t touch anything before reading directions umm… what else…. READ DIRECTIONS The directions tell you when to write things down, don’t go ahead of the directions

b. Listen to the teacher direction too!

2. Wear safety goggles for all labs that involve hazardous chemicals or heating solutions.

3. Know the location and how to use all of the safety equipment in the laboratory; e.g. – the fire extinguisher – the emergency shower – fire blanket – eye wash But if anything bad happens, make sure to notify the teacher first!

If there is a fire a.Notify the teacher! b.Put out a fire on a person with a fire blanket c.Put out a chemical fire with an ABC fire extinguisher

Avoid wearing overly bulky or loose fitting clothing Remove dangling jewelry Tie back long hair Roll up long sleeves NO open-toed shoes. 4. Dress for the lab

5. Do not touch the chemicals with your skin Acids and bases are harmful to your skin Wash hand well with soap and water if your skin comes in contact with a chemical Use the dropper

a. Do not put anything in your mouth either! Chemicals are bad for you…

c. Only handle chemicals under the direction of your instructor. d. If you spill an acid or another corrosive material, wash hand/ skin off with cold water immediately and notify the instructor.

6. When heating a liquid in a test tube, never point the test tube toward yourself or anyone else. Point test tubes away from all people!

7. Read the label on the container or info in directions before using the chemical in the container. Check for proper handling procedures before using the chemical.

8. Immediately, report all injuries and accidents to the instructor.

9. When you are finished CLEAN UP! – Make sure that the gas, water and electricity have been turned off and, – all the equipment is returned to the proper location. – Dispose of chemicals and waste as per directions.

Wipe down all surfaces after supplies are put away into their proper containers. Wash your hands at the end of every lab activity. Clean your area well:

Scenarios 1. The printed directions in the lab book tell a student to pour a small amount of hydrochloric acid into a beaker. James puts on safety goggles before pouring the acid into the beaker. Should have goggles on as soon as he enters the lab! Before reading…

2. It is rather warm in the lab during a late spring day. Anna slips off her shoes and walks barefoot to the sink to clean her glassware. 3. While washing glassware, Mike splashes some water on Evan. To get even, Evan splashes him back.

4. Gina is thirsty. She rinses a beaker with water, refills it with water, and takes a drink. 5. During an experiment, Lindsey decides to mix two chemicals that the lab procedure does not say to mix because she is curious about what will happen.
